Companies
There can be some confusion over terminology. When "wealth" is discussed, it is net worth, i.e. the total owned net financial worth clear of liabilities. As shown in many published lists, a large bank has vast amounts of assets under management, such as loans, but most of these are offset by liabilities (e.g. checking and savings accounts) which enable banks to make these loans. The wealth, consisting of stockholders' capital and retained earnings, is a tiny fraction of this, typically 3% to 4.5%.
On 11 December 2019, Saudi Aramco became the largest company by value of its shares after it was valued at $1.8 trillion in an initial public offering.[14]
