Gameplay

The guest artist(s) must attempt to guess mystery singers who are "real" and "tone-deaf" without hearing them sing. Mystery singers must partake on every round, at which they can receive help and advice from the celebrity panelists.

After eliminating one to two mystery singers on each round, at which they do perform using real voice at the stage of truth. The last mystery singer will do duet-perform by guest artist(s).

Rewards

The winning condition is depending on the winning mystery singer chosen by guest artist(s). They would receive a special reward if it is a "real singer"; or a cash prize if it is a "tone-deaf singer", but it also includes eliminated mystery singers.[2][3]

Formats

Original format

Under the original format, the guest artist(s) can simply eliminate mystery singers after every round concluded; and the last mystery singer will do duet-perform with.

Versus format

Under the versus format (adopted by Giọng ải giọng ai), there are different elimination twists:

  • Both guest artists can eliminate one mystery singer each in the first two rounds, and then both can choose one mystery singer each to duet-perform with in the third round.
  • Both guest artists can save one mystery singer each as a reserve with in the first round, and then the guest artist have the most correctly predicted a bad singer can freely to retain a reserve, or to switch mystery singer to duet-perform with in the third round.[4]

The winning condition implies to each mystery singer chosen by guest artist that has been duet-performed separately, if:

  • One guest artist had chosen a "real singer" and another one had chosen a "tone-deaf singer"; or
  • Both two guest artists had chosen a "real singer" or a "tone-deaf singer".
Star wars format

Under the star wars format, ten former mystery singers were separated into two teams. For each round, a mystery singer is chosen for a "showdown". After this, the voting is done through audience majority, and the votes are accumulated for the winning team.

Rounds

This game is consisting of three rounds with different mechanics, at which point is depending on any ICSYV counterpart.[5]

Singer's visual

  • The guest artist(s) have time to observe and examine each mystery singer based on their appearance. After this, a muted video of each mystery singer that reveals only 0.3 seconds of their singing voice is played as an additional hint.
  • Each mystery singer is given two identities – as a real singer and as a tone-deaf singer. Only one of them is their real identity.

Singer's lip-sync

  • Every mystery singer performs a lip-sync of a song. Real singers lip-sync to their own voice, while tone-deaf singers lip-sync to other's voices.
  • A mystery singer and a substitute lip-sync to the song together. Only one of them is the owner of the voice.
  • The mystery singer lip-syncs to the real singer's voice, then the tone-deaf singer's voice comes in the middle of the performance.

Singer's evidence

  • A proof of each mystery singer's singing ability (i.e. photo, video, certificates, etc) is shown on the screen. Real singers have their own evidences while tone-deaf singers had their evidences fabricated.
  • Three randomly selected panelists must hear the mystery singer's singing voice using a headphone. Afterwards, he or she must defend the mystery singer and convince the guest artist(s) to choose him/her as the final mystery singer.
  • The hosts of the show have randomly assigned clues about the mystery singer. The guest artist(s) must choose a clue for each mystery singer.

Cast

Celebrity panelists

The celebrity panelists (stylized as SING-vestigators, a pormanteau of the words "sing" and "investigator") are a diversed group of people emanated from mainstream personalities to give comments and predictions throughout the show.

Mystery singers

The mystery singers (stylized as SEE-cret songers, a pormanteau of the words "see" and "secret", "song" and "singer") are individuals or groups who were deceiving to be as "real singers". They are standing on a chamber with its aliases to keep their identities concealed until its initial performance.

It is classified into two—the good singer(s) can sing well while the bad singer(s) can sing badly. However, there are groups that could possibly mixed of good and bad singers.

Stage of truth

A stage of truth (or informally truth stage) is a moving platform inside the mystery singers' chamber. When it releases outside, the eliminated mystery singers can perform using its real voices. They introduce their selves and other pertinent information afterwards.

As the show concludes, the winning mystery singer(s) and a guest artist(s) can do duet-perform with, or otherwise they can perform freely without them.

Reception

Legacy

ICSYV was served as a launching pad for the mystery singers achieve their careers successful,[6] such as South Korean acts Hwang Chi-yeul,[7][8][9] Lee Sun-bin,[10][11][12] and Kim Min-kyu;[13][14][15] as well as foreign acts Sephy Francisco,[16][17][18] Ninety One,[19][20][21] and EXP Edition.[22][23][24]

It also defines to as "parlor game" that made activity applies on every community event. At somehow during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines, the Rotaracts organized an ICSYV game, but through teleconference.[25]

During the broadcast of CBS late-night talk show The Late Late Show with James Corden, Ken Jeong was demonstrated on Can They Sing? segment, which involves six staff members as mystery singers through teleconference, but the gameplay is nearly identical to ICSYV.[26]

Controversy

In August 2015, CJ ENM was accused two Chinese programs, God of Songs by SZTV and X-Singer by Beijing TV of plagiarism, which both shows imitated its gameplay similar to ICSYV, but they were denied of its allegations.

It was proved that as both broadcasters were failed to purchase into ICSYV franchise and both of them were unlicensed Chinese counterparts. Despite this, God of Songs would have became successful in due to higher ratings and even trending on social media such as Sina Weibo. JSTV later adopted its official Chinese counterpart and debuted its broadcast on March 27, 2016.[27][28]

During an interview with CJ ENM head of formats Diane Min in June 2020, there was a dispute with Is That Really Your Voice?, another mystery music game show originated by Turkey-based Global Agency in 2013, which ICSYV imitates their own format. Despite this, it was adopted in China via iQiyi which has also recorded the most-watched online show, and France via TF1.[29]

Accolades

ICSYV gains worldwide recognition as it nominated for "Best Non-Scripted Entertainment Program" category at the 44th International Emmy Awards.[30]

International versions

Location of I Can See Your Voice versions:
With a standalone version of ICSYV
With a multi-franchise version of ICSYV

Due to its popularity in South Korea, it went to become a television game show franchise,[31][32] which was distributed worldwide by CJ ENM and several syndicated television productions.[33][34]

Currently, it has spawned fourteen versions in thirteen countries, which includes the Vietnamese spin-off program Giọng ải giọng ai (also called Hidden Voices), which created the versus format that later adopted into ICSYV counterparts.[35][36]
