Iginio Straffi had planned to adapt Winx Club into live action as early as 2011.[6] Before starting production on the project, Straffi gained experience with live-action television shows, working as a producer for Nickelodeon's Club 57.[7] Principal photography for Fate eventually began in September 2019 in Ireland.

According to Straffi, the series is aimed at adult fans of the cartoon.[7] In a 2019 interview, he called it "edgier and darker than what they can imagine."[7] Fate is co-directed by Lisa James Larsson and Hannah Quinn.[1][8]

Development

In a 2011 interview with Screen International, Iginio Straffi first mentioned that he hoped to adapt Winx Club into live action as opposed to animation.[6] At the Ischia Global Fest in 2013, Straffi stated that he was continuing to plan a project "with the Winx in flesh and blood, played by real actors. Sooner or later it will be done."[9] At the time, Straffi had only worked on animated productions, so he transitioned his focus to live action over the next few years.[7] After working as a producer for the live-action show Club 57,[7] Straffi announced in March 2018 that a young adult adaptation of Winx Club would enter production.[10]

Casting calls were held in August 2019.[11][12] The show's filming began in Ireland in September 2019 in Wicklow.[13] Brian Young is the showrunner for the series,[13] and executive produces with Judy Counihan, Kris Thykier, and Iginio Straffi.[14] Lisa James Larsson and Hannah Quinn are directing the series.[1][13] The first season's primary filming location was Ashford Studios, where the series Vikings is also filmed.[15]
