Plot

The story begins in a remote village, Bobbarlanka, adjoining the river Godavari. Inspector Ananda Rao (Jaggayya) a newly appointed Police Officer arrives at the village. There, he encounters various characters, diabolic person Bhushaiah (Satyanarayana), the president of Bobbarlanka, kind-hearted Dr. Dharmaiah (Kanta Rao) and his sister Radha (Vanisri), a school teacher. Anand Rao is particularly fascinated to a person, Madhu (N. T. Rama Rao), a drunkard who always lies in a cauldron of misery. Actually, Madhu belongs to a Zamindari family who lost everything and the entire village rewards him as inhuman beast including his love interest Radha. At present, he has a boat for his livelihood, two henchmen Abbulu (Saradhi) & Subbulu (Balakrishna) and a village girl Manga (Jayasudha), who is affectionate towards him. Madhu always stands against the atrocities of Bhushaiah. Once Bhushiaah gives a false complaint against Madhu, Anand Rao feels his ears without going into the merits and even whips him. Afterward, he learns his past through Dr. Dharmaiah. Madhu's grandfather (Mukkamala) is the Zamindar of the village and Bhushaiah is their Diwan. After completing his studies, Madhu decides to service the village by constructing a barrage for protection, from the floods and to raise the fund he requests his grandfather, but he denies. Bhushaiah exploits the situation by stealing the amount from Zamindar's house, denounces Madhu, also indicts that Madhu has cheated a village girl and creates her death as a suicide by slaughtering. Radha too believes it and hates Madhu. After release, Madhu returns when he finds his grandfather has died and Bhushaiah grabbed his property. Thereon, Anand Rao embarks on a mission to reform Madhu. Both of them become good friends, Anand Rao takes a promise from Madhu to stop drinking and attains him a contract of constructing a dam in an adjoining village. A determined Madhu accomplishes the job commendably. Now the ice is finally broken when the village is endangered by raging flood waters that threaten to breach the dam. All the villagers persuade Madhu to take the mantle of saving the village, but he spurns them, blaming them for his misery. But on request by Radha, he relents and saves the village from havoc. At last, his honor is restored, as is his love interest and Bhushaiah is accused of his wrongdoings. Finally, the movie ends on a happy note with the marriage of Madhu & Radha.
