Choti Sarrdaarni is an Indian drama television series that premiered on 1 July 2019 on Colors TV.[1] It stars Nimrit Kaur Ahluwalia, Avinesh Rekhi and Kevina Tak.[2]

Plot

Bubbly, carefree and lucky go, Meher Kaur Dhillon falls in love with Manav Sharma, a simple lad who aspires to be an IAS officer. Where There Loves Blooms with a Romantic Song ''Ranjha ve'' Means Love Story of Heer Ranjha .The village sarpanch Kulwant Kaur Dhillon who is Meher's mother fixes her marriage with Sarabjit Singh Gill,a widower with a 5 year old son Paramjit Singh Gill and President of Punjab dal party.Meher refuses the marriage proposal as she is in love with Manav and becomes pregnant with his child. Soon her mother comes to know about her pregnancy and ask her to invite Manav to the house.

Kulwant stabs Manav and with help of Meher's Brothers Bitu and Rana dumps him in the river and asks Meher to marry Sarabjit if she wants her unborn child alive as Kulwant aspires to be an MLA, this was only possible for her if Meher marries Sarab.

Meher accepts the proposal to save her unborn child from Kulwant's ill intentions. On their wedding night, she reveals to Sarab about her pregnancy and begs him to let her go as she wants to settle far away and bring up her child.

Sarab gets angry but later promises that he would get her settled in Europe. He plans to take Meher to Serbia where he would get her settled with a new identity but will tell everyone that Meher expired in an accident.

When they leave to Serbia, Param manages to join themselves, by getting in one of the suitcases. Sarab gifts a house and car to Meher, also promising that he wouldn't reveal this to anyone. As he leaves, Meher gets kidnapped. Sarab lies to everyone that Meher died but is blamed for it and gets arrested.

A case is filed and Sarab is about to be punished. Meanwhile, Meher is stuck with the kidnappers . She started a fire in the room she was locked in and escaped. She attempted calling to india by taking help of people.The police arrests Meher because she was being disruptive to a police officer which was her plan. A indian police officer did agree to deport her back to india. At airport, Jagga was dressed as police because the night before, Meher called Param and asked him to tell Jagga to pick her up in the airport. Meher escapes then with Jagga's help, reaches the court and saves Sarab. He accepts her child as his own. Sarab and Meher tell Param about her pregnancy.

Excited, Param reveals this to Sarab's sister Harleen Kaur Gill. A grand party is organised celebrating Meher's pregnancy news. Harleen finds out that the baby is not of Sarab's. She disowns Meher causing her to lose biggest support system in the family. Harleen gives Meher an ultimatum to either abort the child or leave her brother. Meher opts for the abortion but is stopped by Sarab at the last moment. However Harleen still doesn't accept Meher or the baby and vows that the child will never be a part of the Gill Household as long as she lives. Harleen thus becomes negative and against Meher.

A few days later

Param falls sick due to severe liver problem and needs immediate transplantation. Nobody in the family has liver suitable for him. Sarab finds a donor but at the last moment the donor refuses to donate. Meher's liver matches with Param but her pregnancy leads transplantation being risky for her.

The transplantation had only 1% chances of survival succeeds. Param is healed. Meher's condition worsens in surgery and the docters declare her dead. Param and Sarab's prayers for her bring her back to life. Eventually, Meher and Sarab start developing feelings for each other. Sarab opens a hospital in the name of Meher called 'Choti sarrdarrini' Harleen is agiated by this as she thought that Sarab would name it on her name. She turns jealous of Meher.

A few weeks later

Meher is living with Param and Sarab happily. Later Meher’s brother Rana marries his love, Ginni, sister in law of Harleen despite disagreements of the family. In the wedding Meher Gets Injured and is taken to the hospital by Sarab. They find out that Sarab can only save Meher or the baby. Sarab chooses Meher. Then a doctor called Aditi Bedi enters to save Meher and her child. Both are saved and Meher gives birth to a baby boy. Harleen and Robi plans bring sibling rivalry in Param's Mind Against the Newborn Baby. Later Harleen and Sarab half–sister, Aditi Bedi enters Gill Mansion to take revenge from Gill family for not accepting Her mother and her in the past. Later Manav comes back as Vikram Diwan a CBI officer who has come to investigate about 2000crore scam which is reportedly being accused on Sarab .Meher names her child Karanjeet " Karan" Singh Gill. Kulwant kaur falls from staircase on seeing Manav on Tv and later attempts to stab Vikram which she fails and gets arrested and Meher saves her from custody.Meher leaves with Sarab for CBI interrogation.

Production

The series is set in the backdrop of Amritsar in Punjab.[4]

Speaking about her role, "As a newcomer, it was a strong character to play, given that like every young girl Meher also has dreams about the way her life would go and she is ready to take on everybody and everything to fulfill them," said Nimrit Kaur Ahluwalia.[5]

Avinesh Rekhi said,"I will be essaying the role of a politician, Sarabjit, who is a single parent and a loving husband. He meets Meher at a crossroad but accepts her with open arms and gives a new meaning to her life. The concept of Choti Sarrdaarni is very promising and comes with a powerful message and I am certain that the audience will love me in this new avatar."[5]

Kevina Tak who is a female child artist was roped to play the role of a boy named Paramjeet Singh Gill in the series.[6]

The production and airing of the show was halted indefinitely in late March 2020 due to the Covid-19 outbreak in India.[7] Because of the outbreak, the filming of television series and films was halted on 19 March 2020 and expected to resume on 1 April 2020 but could not and the series was last broadcast on 25 March 2020 when the remaining episodes were aired.The show started airing again on 13 July 2020 in the same timeslot. Reception

The initial promo based on Gurudwara bachground of the series created disappointment between the Sikhs and a complaint protesting it was written to the channel by All India Sikh Students Federation as they considered some portrayal hurting their sentiments.[11]

On 12 September 2019, the shoot was held for 3 hours due to the fight by the workers’ union and Allied Mazdoor Union with producers owing to due in payments.[12]

Crossover

In December 2019, Choti Sarrdaarni and Vidya had a crossover while Salman Khan, Sonakshi Sinha and Sai Manjrekar appeared to promote their upcoming film Dabangg 3.[13]

Adaptations

Choti Sarrdaarni was remade in Tamil as Uyire on Colors Tamil.[14]
