The federal constituency was created in the 1984 redistribution and is mandated to return a single member to the Dewan Rakyat under the first past the post voting system.

2004–2016: The constituency contains the polling districts of Minden Heights, Universiti Sains, Batu Uban, Sungai Dua, Bukit Jambol, Bukit Gambir, Taman Jubilee, Taman Pekaka, Pantai Jerejak, Taman Seri Nibong, Pintasan Bahagia, Jalan Mahsuri, Bandar Bayan Baru, Jalan Tengah, Taman Melati, Kampong Sungai Ara, Taman Desa Ara, Sungai Tiram, Sungai Kluang, Kampong Naran, Permatang Damar Laut, Batu Maung, Taman Sri Bayan, Taman Bukit Gedung, Teluk Tempoyak.
