The final tournament was originally scheduled to run from 23 November and will end on 31 December 2020. The tournament was scheduled in a way to avoid a scheduling conflict with the joint 2022 FIFA World Cup2023 AFC Asian Cup qualifiers as some Southeast Asian national teams are still expected to continue to take part in.[2] However on July 30, 2020, the tournament was postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Vietnam are the defending champions.[3]

Format

The format of the 2021 AFF Championship is set to remain the same with the format adopted in 2018. In the group stage of the competition proper, ten teams will be drawn in two groups of five with each team to play home-and-away matches against each other.[3]

However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the tournament may be held in one or two countries instead with Vietnam potentially hosting all or some matches. Up to five subsitution may be allowed as per recommendation of FIFA.[4]
