2020 J. League Cup is the 28th J.League Cup, a Japanese football (soccer) competition which began on 16 February 2020.

The official title is 2020 J.League YBC Levain Cup (2020 JリーグYBCルヴァンカップ) due to the sponsorship of Yamazaki Baking.

Format

All 16 teams playing in the 2020 J1 League will participate. In addition, depending on the result of the 2020 AFC Champions League qualifying play-offs, one or one teams from 2020 J2 League with the best performance in the previous season (i.e., Matsumoto Yamaga FC and Júbilo Iwata, the 17th- and 18th-placed teams in 2019 J1 League, respectively) may participate.

Group stage

Participants of 2020 AFC Champions League group stage (ACL) receive byes for the group stage and the play-off stage.

  • Yokohama F. Marinos and Vissel Kobe received byes for the J.League Cup group stage and play-off stage.
  • FC Tokyo and Kashima Antlers will receive byes for the J.League Cup group stage and play-off stage if they win the play-offs of ACL and advance to the ACL group stage. In case either of them advanced to ACL group stage, Matsumoto Yamaga FC will join the J. League Cup group stage. In case both of them advanced to ACL group stage, Matsumoto Yamaga FC and Júbilo Iwata will join.

As a result, 16 teams will play the group stage. 16 teams are divided into four groups of four teams by the performance of 2019 J1 League and 2019 J2 League (parenthesized below).

Each group is played on a home-and-away round-robin basis. Each match will be played for 90 minutes (without extra time).

Group stage tiebreakers

In the group stage, teams in a group are ranked by points (3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss). If the points are tied, the following tiebreakers are applied:

  1. Points in head-to-head matches among tied teams;
  2. Goal difference in head-to-head matches among tied teams;
  3. Goals scored in head-to-head matches among tied teams;
  4. Away goals scored in head-to-head matches among tied teams;
  5. If more than two teams are tied, and applying all head-to-head criteria above remains a part of teams still tied, reapply the criteria above only for the tied teams.
  6. Goal difference in all group matches;
  7. Goals scored in all group matches;
  8. Penalty shoot-out if only two teams are tied and they met in the last round of the group;
  9. Fewer disciplinary points;
  10. Drawing of lots.

In case of ranking third-placed teams across the groups, the following criteria is used:

  1. Points;
  2. Goal difference in all group matches;
  3. Goals scored in all group matches;
  4. Fewer disciplinary points;
  5. Drawing of lots.

Play-off stage

The number of play-off stage participants depends on the number of teams advanced to ACL group stage.

  • In case four teams advanced to ACL group stage, eight teams (top two teams in each group) will play the play-off.
  • In case three teams advanced to ACL group stage, ten teams (top two teams in each group, and two best third-placed teams across the groups) will play the play-off.
  • In case two teams advanced to ACL group stage, twelve teams (top three teams in each group) will play the play-off.

The play-off stage is played as two-legged ties of two teams each. The away goals rule, an extra time (away goals rule is not applied for the scores in the extra time), and a penalty shoot-out are used if needed.

Prime stage (Knockout stage)

The prime stage (knockout stage) is played by 8 teams who advanced to ACL group stage and won the play-off stage.

The quarterfinals and the semifinals are played as two-legged ties (same as the play-off stage). The final is a single game.

The video assistant referee (VAR) system will be used during the knockout stage.

Regulation changes due to the spread of new coronavirus infection

The extraordinary board meeting held on June 5, 2020 decided to change the tournament method as follows. [1]

  • The U-21 starting rules (including one or more Japanese nationals aged 21 or younger on 31st December 2020 as starters) are not applied to all matches.
  • The group stage will be changed from the previous "2nd round brute force" (6 games for each team) to "1st round brute force" (3 games for each team), with the combination as it was.The results of Match day 1 of the group stage will remain valid.
  • Had participated from J2 Matsumoto Yamaga FC Match day 2 after the game the place such not (Undefeated handling of goal difference 0), in group B Matsumoto and was the competition schedule Match day 2 or later Vegalta Sendai and Urawa Reds is in all After the schedule is over, 3 points will be added to determine the ranking within and between groups.
  • The playoff stage was cancelled, and the 1st club of each group stage and most points among the 2nd place finishers in each group (total 5 clubs) advanced to the prime stage.
  • In the prime stage, 5 clubs that have won the group stage and 8 clubs that added 3 clubs participating in ACL will compete in a one-time knockout tournament. In addition, in the prime stage except the final, extra time will not be played (penalty shoot-out will determine the winner) if tied after 90 minutes.

June 23, J.League announced that it will not use the video assistant referee（VAR）system.[2]

Prime stage (Knockout stage)

Prime stage is a first-round knockout tournament between the 5 clubs that have made it through Group stage and the 8 clubs, including the 3 AFC Champions League participants.

The draw for the Prime stage was take place on 13 August 2020.[6]
