Flitterwaifs

Wild flitterwaifs in the Nightwoods

Flitterwaifs were an intelligent species of wild predatory waifs that lived in the Nightwoods[1]. In the Third Age of Flight, some people kept flitterwaifs as pets in the city of Riverrise[2].

Characteristics

Telepathic

Like all waifs, flitterwaifs had the ability to hear the thoughts of others and to communicate silently with telepathy.[1]

Physical

Flitterwaifs had glowing[3] blood-red[4] eyes and broad, membraned wings. Their bodies were dark, their legs stubby, and their faces flattened. They also had jagged fangs that jutted down at an angle from their top jaw and sharp, hooked talons. Flitterwaifs were relatively small.[1]

Behavioral

Flitterwaifs used their telepathic powers to hunt. They lured their prey with false, seductive thoughts that were specifically tailored for the individual being targeted. For example, when luring Cowlquape, their thoughts included references to Kobold the Wise. Flitterwaifs were willing to fight to keep their food once they had successfully lured it, and were known to dive bomb their opponents in combat.[1]

Usually, flitterwaifs fed on the blood of nameless ones, because that was all they could find in the Nightwoods, but they preferred more succulent prey from beyond the Thorn Forests[5]. Flitterwaifs were also known to eat moths[3].

Flitterwaifs could sleep even while their sleeping perch was in motion[4].

Role in the Edge Chronicles

In the Twig Trilogy

In Midnight Over Sanctaphrax, Twig, Cowlquape, Woodfish, and Goom encountered wild flitterwaifs on their journey to Riverrise. The flitterwaifs successfully lured Cowlquape away and started to feed on him, but the other three travellers fought them off and rescued him. The group then tricked the flitterwaifs with false thoughts and escaped to the base of the Riverrise mountain.[1]

In The Immortals

In The Immortals, flitterwaifs were among the creatures that threatened Nate and Eudoxia during their journey on the Waif Trail[2]. Also, Golderayce One-Eye owned a flitterwaif as a pet[3][4].
