Tarl Warwick (January 20, 1988–), better known as Styxhexenhammer666, Botany101,[3] or Tyrell Warner,[4] is a YouTube talker who promotes alt-right talking points. Warwick previously considered himself a "libertarian"[5], and before that, a "progressive".[6] He's also a self-proclaimed occultist.

As of April 2020, Warwick had over 400k subscribers and 238 million views.[7] On April 12, 2018, Warwick announced that he was running for Governor of Vermont.[8] This run was ultimately unsuccessful.

Flirting with the alt-right

Warwick has been sympathetic to the alt-right since 2016, but was apprehensive to consider himself a part of it. In his first appearance on Red Ice TV in September 2016, he claimed he was "sort of on the fringes of the alt-right, I guess".[10] In his final video of 2016, he said he is more than happy with being called alt-lite.[11] He has since disowned both titles and refers to himself as a classical liberal (or "minarchist".)[12][note 1]

He has been endorsed by noted non-Nazi Richard Spencer[13] and later appeared in one of Spencer's podcasts.[14] In January 2018, in a since-deleted tweet,[9] he declared that he would be joining forces with the "further right," as often done by people who definitely aren't Nazis.

Warwick dedicated a video to express his support for Varg Vikernes and encouraged his viewers to subscribe to Vikernes's channel.[15] You know, standard non-Nazi things.

Warwick has long been interested in the Third Reich, just like many people who totally aren't neo-Nazis. For example, he gave a five-star review of Hitler's Mein Kampf, calling Hitler "idiotic" but describing the book as reading like "a drastic corrective manifest for the primary purpose of improving mankind (albeit through somewhat stupid methods)".[16][note 2] After being called a crypto-fascist for saying "Nazism briefly worked" (on a video about his opposition to Communism),[17] Warwick defended himself in the comments section, arguing that he had spent years attacking corporations and authoritarianism on the left and the right.[18] I guess authoritarianism is bad, except when it sort-of works, in which case it's actually not so bad.

Holocaust "revision"

Warwick grossly underestimates or outright denies several aspects of the Holocaust.[19] In particular, Warwick doesn't question that the Holocaust took place, but questions what proportion of deaths came through execution instead of famine or disease. This is the standard line from "revisionists" who pretend they aren't deniers and like to pretend they're being persecuted for just asking questions about whether the Holocaust really happened according to the "official story".

He insists that Zyklon B was a mostly harmless delousing agent, and Auschwitz was burning through so much of the stuff mostly trying to keep lice from spreading the typhus epidemic brought about by Allied firebombing.[20] But even though it is true that most of Zyklon B in Auschwitz was used for delousing [21], this doesn't contradict the fact that it was also used to murder hundreds of thousands of Jews in the gas chambers, because it doesn't take much to kill people with it. [22] This is a stock claim by "revisionists" who are unable to deal with the evidence for mass gassings, as if an alternative use of the stuff precluded its use for murder! He does admit that maybe the gas was used for the occasional execution, which is an understatement.[23] In the same vein, he supposes the "shower" of Auschwitz to have been an actual shower, committing the same mistake. There were plenty of real showers in Auschwitz, but this doesn't contradict the fact that gas chambers were also disguised as showers. [24]

Warwick gave five stars to the obscure book Black Nazis! A Study of Racial Ambivalence in Nazi Germany's Military Establishment:[25]

This book is certainly not for those who envision nothing but pure evil upon hearing the words "Nazi Germany."[note 3] A nice scholarly look at aspects of the period that most historians overlook- lest we forget that good pious communist Russians killed twice as many people than ever died in the holocaust.

Sexton has written a book, The Hitler Worship Cult, that is "neither pro-Hitler nor anti-Hitler."[26][note 4] Sexton is an anti-Semitic conspiracy theorist who believes that Israel[note 5] is more responsible for World War II than Hitler.[27][note 6] Weronika Kuzniar, whose works he has read, wrote Albion & Zion United: The Brizi-Jewzi World Menace in which she alleges that Jewish people secretly run the world.[note 7] An example:

It is no secret that Yahweh, the g-d of the Jews, promised that they would eventually rule the world (Isaiah 60, 9-12, for instance). Jews therefore enact every effort to bring this about.[28]

Remember, Warwick is obviously, definitely, not a neo-Nazi.

How about now?

The alt-righters that defend Styxhexenhammer666 will say that the clip video where he pushes Holocaust denialism is 9 years old and, therefore, outdated. However, Styxhexenhammer666 still has not really changed his beliefs much about the Holocaust and doubled-down at every chance he had to apologize and learn from the criticism.[29]

On Twitter, whenever someone brings up his denialism, he will always blame Buzzfeed, Right Wing Watch and RationalWiki for the criticism while using his good old "Yus, Holocaust is real" comeback as if anyone can't see through that obvious facade or, as a last resort, he calls his detractors "Leftist shills".[30]

Anti-immigration

Warwick previously said America should allow immigrants from all parts of the world (probably when he was still a "progressive").[32]

However, Warwick has since changed his mind and believes America no longer has enough "space" to admit "limitless" numbers of immigrants. He further believes liberty cannot survive unlimited immigration.[33]

In particular, Warwick opposes Muslim immigration (because Muslims allegedly have a "vested interest in attacking us")[34] and supports a Mexico-USA border wall (saying "it'll pay itself off in a decade").[35][note 8] Indeed, Warwick claims governments are doing too little to keep out "Islamic extremists", although no refugees have carried out fatal terrorist attacks in the US.[36]

Although Warwick sympathizes with Middle-Eastern refugees, he does not wish to accept them into Western countries.[31] Instead, Warwick states that we should "stop destroying their homelands" and should "restore order" in those regimes,[37] which is hardly instantaneous and does little for refugees with currently-destroyed homelands. He believes that the United States (and its allies) should never have involved themselves in Iraq, Syria, Libya, and other countries.[37] In this vein, Warwick has questioned Trump's continuation of drone warfare and attacks on Syrian government forces.[38]

  • Nelson Mandela: When Mandela died, Warwick made a video rejoicing at his death. He stated that apartheid did need to end, but said Mandela was the leader of movements that should have been classed as terrorists.[39][note 9]
  • War: Warwick is against war in general, except wars waged in direct defense of one's nation. He opposes targeted strikes, drone-based attacks, and US funding and arming of militants and classes them all as acts of war.[40]
  • Feminism: Warwick is antagonistic towards MGTOW and supports women's rights, while comparing postmodern (or third wave) feminist movements unfavorably with MGTOW itself.[41] He opposes those who seek to denigrate sexual liberty.[42]
  • Religion: Warwick supports religious liberty but believes organized religious bodies to generally be nothing more than a way for charlatans to make money. He considers himself spiritual, but not religious.[43]
  • Free speech: Warwick is a proponent of generally-limited government, opposing any form of censorship not related to suppressing credible threats of violence, stalking, slander, and copyright infringement.[44] He opposes legislation designed to censor the Internet in particular.[45] He believes that it is better to allow those with extreme viewpoints to vent online than force them to bottle their views up, potentially escalating to violence.[46]
  • LGBT rights: Warwick supports gay marriage,[47] and made a video titled "Donald Trump is Making a Mistake by not further Endorsing Protection of Homosexuals", much to the dismay of many of his viewers.[48] His view on transgender people, though, is pretty much straight from the TERF rulebook, and he doesn't understand the difference between sex and gender, or what transgender actually even is.[49]
  • Drugs: Warwick believes in legalizing all substances.[50] After the Governor of his home state Vermont vetoed legalization of marijuana, he toyed with the idea of running for governor.[51]
  • Energy: Warwick believes that solar power will inevitably replace most fossil fuel usage and that nuclear energy should be seen as a temporary, not permanent, stand-in for truly renewable sources of electricity and fuel.[52]
  • Vaccination: Warwick believes anti-vaxxers are wrong, which just goes to show how stupid anti-vax rhetoric is when this guy goes against it.[53] Still, he believes that vaccination should not be mandatory, but says that unvaccinated children should not go to public school for health reasons.[54] I guess child neglect is okay as long as it doesn't affect other children. (Also, what about other public places?)
  • Hitler and socialism: as of 2020, Warwick has officially claimed that Authoritarianism is, by definition, left-wing, going full Conservapedia.[55]
  • On January 6, 2021, after Trump supporters stormed the Capitol to try and keep Trump in power, Styx outright supported them.[56][57]
  • Centrism doesn't exist, you are either right-wing or left-wing.[58]

Warwick urges his viewers to ignore the "corporate media" by not consuming news stories from TV and Jewsnewspapers.[67] At length, he states that everything from broadcast media is fake:[68]

They're the ones that sold us Iraq, they're the ones sold us every lie that was ever told to us by the government. I think it was Lionel Nation, actually, and I support his channel, I'm a subscriber, who pointed out Operation Mockingbird, like the CIA literally using the US corporate news to lie to people - literal propaganda. There's still a minority of people that trust these idiots. I don't trust them, I don't trust even the alt-media outlets if they have a TV show. I'd rather get my news from some random YouTuber, some random person with a Vid.me account, some random blogger, it's going to be more fair, it's not bought and paid for some government, by some corporate entity, that's the advantage.

As we know, the unalterable laws of the universe prevent governments and corporations from paying people to put up YouTube videos.

Warwick rejects the notion that the Out of Africa theory is settled science, and believes it may (or may not) be displaced by some other hominid origin theory, while dismissing the idea that this has any modern racial relevance, as "hominids were not modern man."[69] Warwick believes that races are biologically meaningful, and are the result of partial divergence:[69]

[T]he divergence that you see that explains race in the modern sense, that explains genetic differences between a European population and an African population or an East Asian population and an aboriginal population, those happened later, long after these hominids that we're discussing. It doesn't matter what region the original lineage arises in, because taking off from that, that original group, uh, prospers for a time, grows larger, some groups move around over time, as they find themselves encroaching into new climates with different light levels, different food sources, different everything, different temperature certainly, different beasts that they have to be worried about, different beasts that they can hunt and eat, different food spices, that's when they diverge. They diverge because their surroundings are different and what is selected for is therefore different. They weren't diverging as long as they were in one primordial area because they were experiencing much the same thing, they were all co-evolving together, the group was evolving, it hadn't diverged, this is a basic principle within natural selection, selective forces, when they were the same on this group, drove them in roughly the same general direction, selected for the same thing. Only when they geographically diverged and were not largely mixing with one another did they turn into modern races.

The claim that human populations did not "mix" (interbreed) is particularly absurd.[citation needed]

Climate change

Warwick believes that climate change is a non-issue and questions if it's anthropogenic.[70][note 12] He supported Donald Trump's decision to leave the Paris Climate Accord, calling the liberal response to that action "propaganda".[71]

  • Mental illness denial: The majority of people diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome are misdiagnosed and are just assholes. He guarantees that in 20 to 30 years, this will be considered true.[72] People with Asperger's syndrome have a much lower life span than the average population.[73] A common cause of death for people with Asperger's syndrome who do not have an intellectual disability is suicide.[73] Yet, Warwick considers people with Asperger's syndrome as misdiagnosed folks "fundamentally of normal mental state".[74]
  • MGTOW and third-wave feminism result from the "behavioral sink", based on the famously-flawed mouse utopia experiment.[75]
  • During the COVID-19 pandemic, he's repeatedly stated that he's against wearing masks in public, despite ample evidence that wearing a mask can help prevent spreading the disease.
  • Also during the COVID-19 pandemic, Styx repeatedly said that lockdowns are ineffective at stopping the spread of the disease (despite ample evidence to the contrary) and bad for the economy.[76][77] He has also criticized the New Zealand government's COVID response more times than he's criticized Trump's COVID response.[78]
