Source

A typical deku scrub spends much or all if its life resting sedentary in one spot partially submerged underground, in an inanimate plant receptacle called a deku flower. When a stranger or potential predator approaches, the scrub pops out its head and instinctively attack from afar using deku nuts it spits with great force. This attack is mostly meant to discourage approach than it is to kill. If the stranger ventures too close, or the deku scrub suffers severe injury, it will either defend into its flower to the end, or flee from the threat in a desperate effort to preserve its own life.
