Deathly Asutas (3.5e Race)

Deathly Asuta

Neutral outsiders born of a fusion of fiendish and celestial bloodlines. Originally created through bizarre arcane rituals that permanently bonded the essence of a fiend and a celestial in the hopes of creating an outsider with the free will of a mortal, deathly asutas have since become their own distinct race.

Personality

Despite the dualistic nature of their heritage, and the suspicion and mistrust of other outsiders, deathly asutas often have achieved personalities, well settled in their lives and able to pursue reflection and personal advancement toward their own goals. However, many deathly asutas have since been recruited to work for the machinations of Death domain deities. Their "balanced" bloodlines make them suitable for pursuing morally ambiguous goals, a task they relish to find out more about themselves in the process. They pursue situations that put them under duress to reveal their true nature (and occasionally, a more dominant bloodline).

A newborn deathly asuta reaches adulthood within a single year, at which point they age normally. Being an attempt to create a mortal outsider, deathly asutas do eventually die of old age, however, as they do, a newborn deathly asuta is created from body and essences of the departed.

Physical Description

Deathly asutas stand at around six and a half feet tall and weigh in at about 190 pounds. For the most part, they appear as idealized humanoids, though most also show traits of their two bloodlines. The dominance of their bloodline not only manifests itself in their appearances, but in their personalities as well, and these celestial and fiendish traits may change over time, or even suddenly if they experience a drastic change of heart. They always have wings, but the wings vary greatly. Most commonly, these wings are dark gray and red feathered wings.

Those deathly asutas that favor their celestial bloodline may have golden skin, sparkling eyes, angelic wings, or some other sign of their higher nature.

Those deathly asutas that favor their fiendish bloodline may have dark scales, horns, glowing red eyes, bat wings, a fetid odor, or some other obvious sign that it is tainted with evil.

Relations

In the attempt to better understand life, deathly asutas pursue the understanding of death, and as agents of the machinations of death, most humanoids tend not to trust them, or at the very least, understand and relate to them. Most outsiders manage to get along fairly peaceably with deathly asutas, being that they are a neutral party.

Deathly asutas have a calming effect on animals, a trait that helps them to gain the trust of humanoids.

Alignment

While most deathly asutas are neutral, their dualistic bloodlines make them a vastly aligned race, and may be of any alignment.

Lands

Deathly asutas are tough and able to live just about anywhere. Most commonly, they are found among diverse populaces, trade towns and frontier fortifications where planar creatures congregate. Deathly asutas are found throughout the planes.

Religion

Since deathly asutas are often in the employ of Death deities, they praise their masters. However, there are free-roamning deathly asutas, who are free to choose what power (if any) they revere.

Language

A deathly asuta is raised to know Abyssal, Infernal and Celestial. Occasionally, they'll combine these languages into a pidgin language typically referred to as Asuta, a word meaning roughly "the coming together of that which has long been separated" or "a convergence of the diverged".

Names

In the scope of naming conventions, the history of deathly asuta names is a rough guess at best. As beings in touch with many civilizations across the planes, deathly asutas have a wide variety of kinds of names, ranging from celestial to fiendish, mundane to eldritch. Racial Traits

Variant: Monstrous Progression

Presented here is a variant progression that includes 6 Hit Dice of Outsider spread over 6 monstrous progression levels to allow players a chance to play deathly asutas at low levels.

Variant Racial Traits

A deathly asuta progresses his Damage Reduction, Resistance to Energy and Spell Resistance throughout the levels of his monstrous progression class. He only continues to gain the progression of his racial abilities in non-racial classes after he has finished his final level in this monstrous progression class. For example, his Damage Reduction would be 5/Magic if his levels are 5 deathly asuta/1 fighter. If he finishes his monstrous progression class and becomes 6 deathly asuta/1 fighter, he would gain Damage Reduction 7/Magic. The deathly asuta who has finished his monstrous progression gains Immunity to acid, cold, electricity and fire at 20 HD.
