Armor Padding (3.5e Equipment)

Armor Padding

Padding is a nonmagical way to improve upon already existing armor. Certain metallic armors are sufficiently loose to warrant the use of additional padding. This padding consists of twin layers of thin, strong leather, one above and one below the original metal armor. Effectively, it is similar to using leather armor in conjunction with another type of armor, which is an effective and relatively inexpensive alternative to using magical enhancement.

When a type of armor that is suited for padding is enhanced in this fashion, it weighs an additional 10 pounds, its existing (nonmagical) AC bonus improves by 1 point, its maximum Dexterity bonus to AC decreases by 1, its armor check penalty increases by an additional -2 and its arcane spell failure chance heightens by 10%. The armor increases by 1 weight category (for example, medium armor becomes heavy), unless the armor so improved is fashioned from mithral. Neither the armor's hardness or hit points change. Druids still cannot wear the padded variant of any armor.

Types of armor that can be altered in this fashion are chain shirts, chainmail and banded mail.

Armor reinforced with padding is mildly resistant to piercing weapons, and bestows \ bludgeoning or slashing if light, 2/bludgeoning or slashing if medium and 3/bludgeoning or slashing if heavy. Damage reduction effects only apply if the armor is made from adamantite, dragonhide, mithral, or some stronger material.

Armor with padding is referred to as a padded version of that type of armor (i.e. padded chainmail), and is always masterwork. Costs for a padded armor is 300 gp, plus the value of normal armor of its original type, plus 25 gp times the original armor's AC bonus. Since armor with padding is effectively two layered armors, the cost includes two masterwork elements instead of one.
