Main Character & Companions
Central Characters
Father
ちちおや Chichioya
- The Ace: Regarded by most as the #1 member of the Guardians.
- Captain Ersatz: Of Indiana Jones.
- Disappeared Dad: He vanishes after the first scene of the story, and never returns for years.
- Good Morning, Crono: How he wakes you up at the beginning.
- Nice Hat: In the Game Boy version. In the DS remake he's not wearing his hat, and is known more as the "man with the whip".
- Rebel Leader: Leads the Guardians, who call him "the Colonel".
- Secret Other Family: Appears this way when he shows up seeming to be Lin's father. Turns out he only cares for Lin and her mother while Mask is away.
- Whip It Good: His trademark weapon set. Especially notable in the remake.
Apollo
アポロン Aporon
- Affably Evil
- Big Bad
- The Dandy: The Deities Of Human Origin have chosen largely different A God Am I styles. Apollo has opted to look as elegant and well-dressed a man as possible.
- Dark-Skinned Blond
- Deity of Human Origin
- Evil Plan: Collect all the relics and release their power.
- Expy: His appearance is heavily reminiscent of the wizard enemies from Makai Toushi SaGa.
- Hoist by His Own Petard: Apollo's Evil Plan succeeds, but he thinks he has all 77 Relics, when there are actually 78 -- the rumor of 77 was planted by the Guardians themselves, who knew there were 78. Having an incomplete collection, Apollo's 77 Relics proved to be too powerful for him, gruesomely destroying him as he tried to unleash their power.
- Gambit Pileup: His plan and the Guardian's plan and the heroes plan etc.
- Light Is Not Good
- Long-Haired Pretty Boy: In the original game.
- Out-Gambitted: The guardians spread the belief that there were only 77 Relics. This contributes to Apollo's demise.
- Xanatos Gambit: Apollo recognizes that the main characters are better Relic collectors, and plans to let them collect all the remaining Relics. He then steals them all.
Goddess
めがみ Megami
FFL2 "Isis"
- Almighty Janitor: Literally. The Goddess's entire occupation is to maintain the proper function of the world, the Central Temple and the Sky Pillars.
- Big Good
- Gambit Roulette: In between her needed times of Central Temple maintenance, she intentionally divides herself into smaller pieces and scatters them among the worlds as individually powerful Relics, to promote the raising of heroes who will be powerful enough to collect and assemble the Relics, and then assist her in carrying out repairs.
- Powers That Be
- Winged Humanoid
Home arc
Teacher
せんせい Sensei
FFL2 "Mr. S"
- Badass Teacher
- Cyclops
- Expy: Of the slime monsters from Makai Toushi SaGa. He has the same abilities too. The rest of SaGa 2's slime monsters have a different appearance, but are still one-eyed.
Ashura & Guardians arc
Kai
カイ
FFL2 "Ki"
- Born Winner: Kai was actually born with Relics micronized inside her own body. That's right, she had pieces of the Goddess inside her body. This gave Kai the power to heal.
- Fantastic Voyage Plot: One of the game's dungeons is the interior of Kai's body.
- Healing Hands: And she'll heal anyone who visits her at the Goddess's temple. She eventually loses this power after the Relics are removed from her body.
- High Priestess: Of the Goddess's temple, where she's called "Mother Kai".
- White Magician Girl
Mask
ふくめん Fukumen
- Body Double: For Father, except for that mask he's wearing, such that he's suspected to be Father during his first appearance.
- Coat, Hat, Mask: Has a coat and hat identical to Father's in the Game Boy version. Both he and Father lose their hats in the DS remake.
- Disappeared Dad: To Lin.
Ashura
アシュラ
- Disc One Final Boss
- From Nobody to Nightmare: Ashura was originally just an ordinary Goblin who managed to collect enough Relics.
- Horned Humanoid
- Multi-Armed and Dangerous
Lin
リン Rin
FFL2 "Lynn"
- Anime Chinese Girl
- The Load: You have Lin as a guest party member all of twice, each time only for a battle in which she's too weak to make any difference.
- Long-Lost Relative: The main character thinks Father is also Lin's father, and seriously suspects that Lin is his/her little sister. This turns out not to be true.
- Spell My Name with an "S"
- Zettai Ryouiki: In the remake.
Venus arc
Venus
ビーナス Bīnasu
- Deity of Human Origin
- Faux Affably Evil: She thanks the main characters for defeating Ashura, and grants them permission to come and go in her megalopolis as they please. This is the only extent of her niceness, and she doesn't even to try to disguise how much of a depraved Alpha Bitch she is.
- God Save Us From the Queen
- Horned Hairdo: In the remake.
- Rich Bitch
- Suspiciously Specific Denial: Venus denies that her power or beauty comes from Relics, or that there are any Relics in her world at all. Some people are naïve enough to believe this, like Antony.
- This Is Unforgivable!: Venus's reaction, practically word for word, to Olivia deliberately scarring her own face.
- World's Most Beautiful Woman: And the most graceless one.
Olivia
オリビア Oribia
FFL2 "Flora"
- Arranged Marriage: To Julius. Called off when Venus dies.
- Beauty Is Bad: Olivia decides that freedom from the controlling Venus means marring her own beauty. She slices her own face with a knife and then requests Venus to banish her from her megalopolis. This only pisses Venus off.
Julius
ユリウス Yuriusu
FFL2 "Nils"
- Arranged Marriage: To Olivia. Called off when Venus dies.
- Dark Is Not Evil
- Dogged Nice Guy: At first Julius seems to be a less sympathetic Prince Charming Wannabe, until it's clear that he never had any more of a choice in the matter than Olivia.
- Easily Forgiven: Julius isn't really one of the good guys or one of the bad guys. He seems rather ambivalent to Venus's control of his life, mostly excited about getting to marry someone like Olivia. When Venus is finally defeated and Julius is no longer betrothed to Olivia, Julius apologizes for his arrogance and remains friends with Olivia and Antony. Olivia points out that Julius didn't actually do anything bad -- he didn't actually have a choice in the overall situation, so she saw no fault that needed to be forgiven.
- Estrogen Brigade Bait: Julius is said to be popular with the girls, though he himself doesn't seem to be fully aware of this.
- Evil Is Sexy: Okay so he's not evil, but this is the trope that allows Imp/Devil monsters to remain inside the city.
- Hopeless Suitor: Julius actually genuinely likes Olivia, but has no real chance of winning her heart from Antony.
- Horned Humanoid: A demon who's beautiful enough to live in Venus's megalopolis.
Antony
アントニー Antonī
FFL2 "Leon"
- Badass Long Hair: Flowing in the wind, no less. Antony became this after being exiled from Venus's megalopolis where he had to fend for himself.
- Beauty Is Never Tarnished: He only injured his leg, and was still quite beautiful. Venus did not agree, seeing the injury as something that tarnished Antony's perfection, and she banished him from her megalopolis.
- Long-Haired Pretty Boy
- Unkempt Beauty: After exile. Presumably he was better-manicured when living in Venus's megalopolis.
- Walking Shirtless Scene: In the original. He was shirted in the remake.
Edo arc
Otama
お玉
FFL2 "Hana"
- Private Detective
- Tomboy: An irrepressible one at that.
- You Killed My Father: Otama's father was a Private Detective who was killed by Echigoya, but she could never prove it. She's seeking justice.
Rônin
ローニン
FFL2 "Taro"
- Badass Teacher: He's a schoolteacher with a Muramasa.
- Ronin: Yes, his appellation and occupation are the same.
- Undercover Cop Reveal: Rônin is actually a Guardian, and is friends with Father.
- Only Sane Employee: He seems to have more caution and common sense than Otama.
- Petting Zoo People
- Species First Name: In the official 1991 English localization, Denpachi was renamed "Kame", which is Japanese for "turtle".
Echigoya
越後屋
- Ambiguously Gay: The DS remake makes him look extremely Camp Gay, but the game never comes out and says it. If true, this would also make Echigoya a Gayngster.
- Corrupt Corporate Executive
- Eyes Always Shut: His appearance in the Game Boy version.
Shôgun
将軍
- Collared by Fashion
- The Dandy: With a Kefka-level Costume Porn.
- The Dragon: To his father, Ôgosho.
- Evil Chancellor
- The Man Behind the Man: Echigoya was only a lower level gangster compared to Shôgun.
Ôgosho
大御所
FFL2 "Magnate"
- Deity of Human Origin
- The Don/The Man Behind the Man: The man behind both Shôgun and Echigoya.
- Giant Space Flea From Nowhere: After you defeat Shôgun, Ôgosho arrives out of nowhere, announcing himself as Shôgun's father, and then kills his own son for failing him. You have to defeat him then and there, and he's as difficult to battle as the other God battles. Sure enough, defeating him yields a cache of Relics.
- Horned Humanoid
- You Have Failed Me...: He kills his own son Shôgun for allowing himself to be defeated.
Odin arc
Odin
オーディン Ôdin
- Deal with the Devil: Earlier in the game, if your party is annihilated in battle, you will be transported to Valhalla, and Odin will offer you a Bargain with Heaven to be resurrected from the beginning of the battle, if you agree to fight Odin someday. But when you finally reach Valhalla through the Sky Pillar, you'll have to fight him anyway, regardless of whether you made the deal. It turns out he was just another Deity of Human Origin searching for more Relics to make himself powerful.
