Retsupurae/YMMV
- And the Fandom Rejoiced: After not doing an actual RP (where they make fun of Let's Players) since January and focusing mainly on longplay MSTing, many thought Retsupurae was done for 2011. But the release of "Mystery of the Sponsored Let's Play" and "Let's Play Headaches" seems to mean that RPs are still being made.
- Also, Chip and Ironicus, after a year and a half, continued the Retsufrash of the Xin series.
- Broken Base: Viewers are pretty divided on the Apocalypse RP, as a portion consider it the funniest case of reference overdosing, and the rest consider the Incredibly Lame Puns render the video intolerable.
- Complaining About Shows You Don't Watch: Their commentary on The Nostalgia Critic's Let's Play of Bart's Nightmare features an extra 15 minutes of complaining and criticizing Doug Walker's videos, website, contributors and fanbase, despite admittedly knowing very little about the topic. They did reference his True Grit video, but they still seemed to know little about the show, though they did have a few points.
- This also seems to be the case with their ronguprae of Cobra: The Space Adventure for the Sega CD. Neither of them seems to know a lot about the manga or the anime (Slowbeef did mention he was going to read the manga at one point just to get an idea of the game's story but eventually decided to go into it blind), and assume Cobra is as much a feeb in the original story.
- Critical Backlash: They mention Sir Ron Lionheart's low subscriber count, and blame it on his voice. Their spoofing of them made him extremely popular because of his accent.
- The Mystery of the Sponsored Let's Play: Lots of Seamus's fans had found the video and in a fit of rage, have invaded it to give it hundreds of dislikes and negative comments. Retsupurae has gotten ire for riffing on certain LPers before, but not of this magnitude.
- The same thing happened on their riff on The Nostalgia Critic, but not quite on the magnitude of Seamus', as the Nostalgia Critic's own fanbase is split on the video, and Doug Walker himself has expressed regrets over how it turned out. Some say the Critic's LP was a bad video and deserved it, some are panning the Retsupurae just like Seamus' fans did, and some are saying they disliked both the original Let's Play and the riff.
- It happened again with their rongprae of King's Quest VI Heir Today Gone Tomorrow. Quite a lot of people have come to the defence of that particular game - and the series in general - in the comments section, pointing out that there were King's Quest games far more douchebaggy. Near the end of the rongprae, even Slowbeef notes that V probably deserved it more, and guess what they went after next?
- The Mystery of the Sponsored Let's Play: Lots of Seamus's fans had found the video and in a fit of rage, have invaded it to give it hundreds of dislikes and negative comments. Retsupurae has gotten ire for riffing on certain LPers before, but not of this magnitude.
- Crosses the Line Twice: Some of their videos.
- Dude, Not Funny: Some of their attacks on bad LPers go a little too far. Acknowledged by slowbeef, who admits that he's ashamed of some of the older riffs, such as the Starfox 64 retsupurae.
- Ensemble Darkhorse: Most of the So Bad It's Good guys fall here, but Dan McNeely from the Trapped series gets a special mention. His Smug Snake voice and Magnificent Bastard personality caught the attention of the riffers and the fans. Chip Cheezum even got his voice actor to do a Dramatic Reading of The You Testament creator MDickie's journal.
- Despite only guesting in a handful of early RP videos, Shmorky has a surprisingly large number of fans.
- This was pretty much free advertising for Electrical Beast.
- Mike Dawson of all people is STILL the topic of much fanart despite the wrongpurae having ended a while back.
- Fan Dumb
- In the tenth part of their Xin Commentary, Chip notices that somebody posted a review that Matched their commentary in the first 9 parts.
Chip: Who did this?
- Slowbeef has stated that one reason they don't do so many traditional Retsupurae videos anymore is overzealous fans harassing the victims to the point of trying to get them banned from YouTube.
- Fan Haters: Most of the comments on a riffed video can be summed up as: If you like this loser, you suck.
- As for the Let's Players that were riffed on, this could apply to some of them. While they might not mind the people of Retsupurae themselves, they may dislike the fans.
- Faux Symbolism: Mocked by Chip and Ironicus in A Demon Tale.
- Fetish Retardant: Yowie Wowie!! Barring the rancid "script" and the terrible apron joke, this is a video that caters to neither Yaoi fans (because it prominently stars two women) nor Yuri fans (because said girls are also pretending to be boys). Assuming you're not a fan of both, of course...
- Harsher in Hindsight. Watch this. Now scroll down and read the comments. Kinda kills the laughs, doesn't it?
- It should be noted however, that those arent the actual Retsupurae guys, but somebody else entirely.
- Hate Dumb: SSoHPKC's fans, who continued blasting Retsupurae even after Seamus said he greatly enjoyed the video.
- Hilarious in Hindsight:
- During the retsupurae of Cornshaq's Mario 2 LP, Slowbeef utters, "Mrs. O'Neil, the answer to this multiplication problem is 12, but also Mario 2 is the greatest game ever." Some have drawn parallels between that statement and one that a certain famous person made over a year later.
- Reading "On Liberty" becomes a bit difficult after watching "SNES9X".
- Likewise for American Gods after watching "A Public Service Announcement for Let's Players".
- Furthermore Meet 'N' Fuck Kingdom is this after being mentioned in a couple of Retsufrashes.
- In the Arise 2 RP, when they encounter a keypad, Diabetus immediately asks if the code is 666. It isn't. One year later, Arise 4 comes out. There's another keypad in that game. Guess what the code is?
- On a more worldly aspect, the makers of Last Alert made one of the villains an Expy of Libya's Gaddafi. That said, Gaddafi was a very visible figure in the mid-to-late 80s; see Abdul Fakkadi from Transformers Generation 1 for another example. Come Retsupurae:
Slowbeef: I think it's supposed to be Qaddafi from Libya, but you know how videogames do that fake-
Diabetus: A lot of foresight, there.
- In one video, they claim that Miss Hannah Minx is "a cross between Hello Kitty and Elvira!" Later...
- In this video, Diabetus says he can't wait until people start LPing Batman: Arkham Asylum right after release. Two days later this happened.
- Near the start of "True Shit", Diabetus takes a crack at the opening credits of The Town With No Name, asking "Is this a western, or Sci Fi?" The ending to the game has the main character ride a train off into space.
- In the same video, Diabetus mocks the overly simplistic "Here's The Queen" card game by saying "In the DLC they have an Ace". A few days after the RP, cubex55 posted a "Full Version" of the original Longplay with a few things he missed (including the "real" ending of the game). One of those things was a different card game called... "Chase the Ace".
- slowbeef and Diabetus call Cobra the "anti-Han Solo", and the former even asks if Cobra's attempting to imitate Dante at one point. Earlier, Dante and Han Solo were considered derivatives of Cobra.
- When the villain at the temple reveals his name to be Hammerbolt Joe, Diabetus offers his condolences. Later in the game, Cobra makes the same joke after killing the fake Parrot Grass before it can finish revealing its name.
- Ho Yay: Between Slowbeef and Dave_o in their Braid retsupurae.
- I Am Not Shazam: The man behind the Gaming in The Clinton Years videos is called "navgtr" by Slowbeef and Diabetus. His name is actually George Wood, and navgtr (or NAViGaTR) stands for "National Association of Video Game Testers and Reviewers."[1]
- In rants against them, the term "Retsupurae" is almost always confused for just one guy. This indicates that either the complainants have literally never seen an RP video, or that they're actually too stupid to realize that there's more than one voice talking in the vids.
- Memetic Badass: Their take on Gally 'Vanish' Gregman and/or his voice actor, Paul Eiding.
- Inverted with Mike Dawson, now considered the wimpiest game "hero" of all time.
- Memetic Mutation:
- Please Stop Let's Playing I Wanna Be The Guy
- SNES9X,
- anything from the Gaming in The Clinton Years videos.
George Wood: I have a challenge for (game development company). In the next (game the development company makes), (main character) gets (terminal disease or crippling disadvantage). Imagine the drama of? a vulnerable (main character), despite his/her illness, still persist in his/her adventure. It needs fleshing out -no pun intended- but we guarantee the industry will be shocked, stunned, and moved at the efforts to make (main character)'s character more meaningful. We love (main character), but it's about time the industry had a big shock? for a change.
- A lot of people had this response to the video: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Done.
George Wood: Donkey Kong Country is truly perfect. If you do not get this amazing new generation of Donkey Kong Country madness, you are stupid. Yes, I know it's insulting, but that's also the truth. If you're a true video game fan, you will not hesitate in the slightest bit to buy this piece of gaming history.
George Wood: This game was disappointingly enjoyable.
- Elemental Goddess gives us Islamic Fundamentalists!
- Parodying Newgrounds scores by posting incredibly vitriolic and hyperbolic one paragraph reviews followed by "10/10" or "9/10"
- 'My grotty piss stained toilet'.
- Woe be unto those YouTube videos featuring someone named Mike Dawson ever since the Dark Seed 2 RP, such as this. May your comments be filled with confusing references to such.
- The Dark Seed 2 RP in general is a Fountain of Memes.
- The infamous 'titty-mmm-bop-bop-tittays' line from Xin #11 was this from the start.
- Most Annoying Sound: Any LPer who sings along with the music, does voice impressions, or uses too many sound effects. Playtennis14 and NostalgicRageHQ are two good examples.
- Their opinion on Doug Walker's voice.
- The oyster in King's Quest VI gets this reaction as soon as he starts talking.
- In the Space Adventure Cobra longplay, Diabetus remarks how annoying the alarm is. Then a character gives the order to "sound the alarm!" while an alarm is clearly already sounding. A new alarm starts sounding along with the original alarm.
- The town music in King's Quest V. When Kuroinokaze goes back into the town a fourth time, they begin to wonder if the longplay video was actually designed to kill them.
- Various animals in King's Quest V, too, which leads to an unusual insult based on the above:
Diabetus: [about the rat] Your voice is like the town theme.
- Network Decay: The channel seems to be undergoing this, shifting from focusing on bad LPers and flashes to focusing heavily on longplay MSTing. Admitted by slowbeef, who said that they were beginning to run out of material for Retsupurae videos, and noting that their Fan Dumb was making them wary of riffing on just any LPers.
- Nightmare Fuel:
- BigMastodon shoving pizza rolls into his greasy obese maw. Even the typically imperturbable Diabetus sounds excruciatingly grossed out.
- Some of the later quoted comments in this video. Kudos to Mr. Beardly for the voices.
- ZeldaAAAAaaaaAAAGH, where over half a video's footage turns into a glitchy, broken mess. If you're a fan of Marble Hornets or other similar works, this can be quite scary. Several people have commented that they expect to see Slenderman somewhere in the video.
- Nightmare Retardant:
- Their reaction to the "scary" flashes that they've watched.
- Lechuza too. When the scariest thing about your horror game is the haggard-looking face of your protoganist plastered across the title screen, something is very wrong. At the end of the game, an owl demon appears to kill the protoganist: the creators clearly want you to be scared out of your mind, but it falls flat because the "owl demon" is just a photograph of a great horned owl!
- No Such Thing as Bad Publicity: A coping mechanism often employed by the subjects of the RPs
- The Scrappy: If a Retsupurae features a guest commentator that isn't Dave_O or Proteus, you can bet that some of the comments are gonna bash him:
- Ferr got a lot of hate for starring in the infamous drunken Retsupuraes, although at that time he was drunk with Diabetus and the commentary from him was questionable.
- Though you can say most LPers featured on Retsupurae are disliked, none seems to have attracted as much vitriol, both amongst the crew and the fanbase, than Queenie Z. Lijik was another one, which eventually forced him to close his account.
- Fictional example: Dark Seed 2's Mike Dawson. You can practically feel the animosity slowbeef and Diabetus have for him as the longplay goes on.
- So Bad It's Good: Some of the LPers that got riffed on fall into this territory.
- WhiskeyOnTheRoad's zoomed-in Pokemon Yellow LP has to be seen to be believed.
- ActionBastard's Monster in My Pocket LP with his friend Tyler. "You're such a petty douchebag".
- The sprite machinima Metroid Extinction, which seems to revel in being terrible.
- Several of the games they riff on, such as Last Alert, The Town With No Name, and The Trapped Trilogy.
- Jay7492XYZ:: (who is actually Psychedelic Eyeball) did a Retsupurae of Slowbeef. It falls under this.
- So Okay It's Average: Most of the LPers riffed on fall into this category.
- Special Effect Failure: Several of the Flash games they've reviewed. The Arise games and Death Trap are particularly noteworthy offenders.
- To elaborate on Death Trap: every single background picture looks directly ripped off a 3D art gallery website of the mid 90s. A lit fireplace is displayed in one room at a slight angle. Not only is the fire inside it not angled and not only is it tiled incorrectly (so it appears that a second fire is floating in midair above it), it is very obviously an animated GIF. In addition, the jump scares are just pictures with slight twitching animations applied to them. Even Arise managed to make better jump scares than that.
- This is one of the things that angered Chip and Ironicus with Fusion Media Hub.
- At one point in Arise, they find a drawer full of blood. Transparent blood.
Diabetus: Oh my god, it's Crystal Light!
- Tear Jerker: Mario, Party of One? Funny commentary aside, this is by far their most upsetting RP, no thanks to Joshey164.
- They Changed It, Now It Sucks: Initial fan reaction to the "Retsuflash" period of RP. Seems to have mostly died down when it became obvious they weren't going to stop their usual RPs.
- Same could be said by some fans on their series of Longplay RPs from early 2011 on.
- They Retsupurae'd a Famous Let's Player, Now They Suck:
- After they mocked LuizPrower, UltraJMan, Protonjon, Cloud8745, DeceasedCrab, HC Bailly, and Oyster. Made funnier by the fact that Oyster was in on that one all along.
- Strangely enough, before Diabetus started Retsupurae he did a few Let's Plays with Deceased Crab as either a guest or co-operative commentator, most notably his Little Nemo the Dream Master LP Slowbeef did an alternating LP with Deceased Crab on before Retsupurae too, it was Super Castlevania IV.
- Inverted in the case of SirRonLionheart. Though he wasn't that popular at the time of the episode; Ron's subscriptions skyrocketed after this grilling. They've even said that they love him, now.
- The same has been said for ElectricalBeast. EB, for his part apparently quite enjoyed his Retsupurae videos.
- SSoHPKC/Machinima. Only 5 hours after the video was posted, it had 1,200 likes and 1,600 dislikes. To be fair, all of the dislikers were followers of Seamus and Machinima, which was at least 300k strong for Seamus alone. To make matters even worse, SSoH is a follower of Retsu much like Proton Jon, and has admitted he even likes the video, but people still don't catch on and accuse slowbeef and Diabetus of pointless trolling.
- Their riff on The Nostalgia Critic caused quite a bit of flak, mostly for all the personal insults, although it was somewhat mitigated by Doug himself admitting the LP went really, really badly.
- Their Amnesia: The Dork's Descent video got a lot of flak from both fans of the LPer and fans of the game, who claimed it was scary enough to justify the LPer's reactions.
- During the Wrongpurae of Apocalypse, Slowbeef mocked the Playstation, wondering if there were any games that were memorable on the system. Whether or not he was serious, many people took it badly.
- After they mocked LuizPrower, UltraJMan, Protonjon, Cloud8745, DeceasedCrab, HC Bailly, and Oyster. Made funnier by the fact that Oyster was in on that one all along.
- Ugly Cute: Dark Seed 2's Behemoth in its larval form, who Slowbeef and Diabetus affectionately term "shrimp baby."
- Uncanny Valley: The various animations in Newgrounds flashes, such as the weird puppet-people in Arrival in Hell, the incredibly stiff animation in The Mike Weiss Show, or the Deranged Animation in Xin.
- There's also Earnest Evans, with his QWOP-style animation. One of slowbeef's friends said it best: "Is he supposed to be human?"
- Unintentionally Sympathetic: Meet Joshey164. Despite his LP of Mario Party 2[2] being RP'd in order to highlight the very depressing nature of it, in the end, the two actually feel incredibly sorry for him and suggest their fans to go over to Josh's original video and encourage him. Since then, Josh has undergone a massive Colbert Bump with his channel, chock-full of enthusiastically supportive comments (whether Josh's newfound fandom is actually being sincere about all this is anybody's guess).
- Values Dissonance: A somewhat common theme in the Wrongpuraes is how games that did so well in the past are just awful now. For example, slowbeef states how he liked the King's Quest games in the past, but now realizes they're terrible adventure games full of MoonLogicPuzzles, Guide Dang It moments, and the use of Save Scumming to know about events the player would otherwise know nothing about.
- Rise of the Dragon won a Special Award for Artistic Achievement from Computer Gaming World magazine. Upon seeing the same art, slowbeef remarks that "It's like the art direction guy had a seizure."
- What Do You Mean It Wasn't Made on Drugs?: A few LPers sound like they're under the influence of something.
- During the Queenie Z LP, you can clearly hear a bong hit coming from one of the RPers' mics (most likely Dave_o due to his slurred speech during the ordeal). Which, given the video in question, is quite understandable.
- The Woobie: Their general treatment of Billy MC.
slowbeef: For the record, Billy MC: Of all the people we've made fun of, I like you the best, but you are still fucking awful.
- Slowbeef himself during Let's Play Wii Sports Resort Immediately. You can just hear how far the video pushed him toward the brink. Many of the comments show a bit of concern for the man as well.
- Tyler, Action Bastard's guest in their LP of Monster In My Pocket, almost never gets a word in edgewise while Action Bastard throws abuse at him for being a bad player. Even Slowbeef and Diabetus tell poor Tyler to stand up for himself.
- A new one is Joshey164. They even ask the viewers to leave encouraging comments on the original video!

- ↑ The name is in all the videos because they're the ones who collected and archived the videos.
- ↑ Which includes such gems such as him mainly rolling low numbers on the board, poor ability to win minigames, occasionally bumping into the camcorder with a bad autofocus, and above all, playing it alone.
