Pretty Cure Strange Happenings

Pretty Cure Strange Happenings is a planned fanfic by ryanasaurus0077. It includes several characters, including one from the main cast, inspired by WAaI! boys in skirts and features a thematic obviously inspired by Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?.

This page needs a better description. You can help this wiki by expanding or clarifying the information given.

Tropes used in Pretty Cure Strange Happenings include:
  • Actor Allusion: FINALLY Tessho Genda (credited here as "Tessho 'Pirouette' Genda") gets a role that reflects his own ballet training.
    • Also, a girly main character voiced by Nanae Kato in the Japanese version and Luci Christian in the English version takes ballet lessons and uses ballet as a superpower in magical form. Sound familiar? Except this time the character in question is a male maiden.
    • Don't forget Sera yelling "Urusai! Urusai! Urusai!!!" as she tries to find an off button or a mute button on Skye in episode 6, already having grown tired of his deliberately antagonizing her. She does it again in several other episodes.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: Averted with Sera's younger sister, Fujiko, who is actually quite nice, even to her. Although, she does snark at least once, particularly in the scene in episode 20 where she's helping Sera get dressed in her tuxedo for the gala:

Fujiko: You just need to... loosen up, Sis. Be cool.
Sera: You been talking to my car?
Fujiko: What?
Sera: You'll see.

  • Anti-Hero: Kyoko is Type III following her Heel Face Turn; though she at least tries to be nicer than she was before, she does tend to sing "Little girl with little breasts, scares the dragon from its nest!" around Sera, much to the latter's chagrin, as well as jokingly flip Haru's skirt when the two are alone together (i.e. not on school grounds).
  • Attractive Bent Gender: Haru is so cute some students forget he's a male maiden.
  • Author Appeal: Wholesome Crossdressers and Emma Watson.
  • Bare Your Midriff: Cure Kyuketsu's corset does this, though it tends to be covered by her sleeveless leather jacket anyway.
  • Berserk Button: Yes, even the demure Haru Nagato has one. He gets REALLY angry when he realizes that Chris had just petrified his father. Slowly, worry turns into Unstoppable Rage, and Haru goes ABSOLUTELY PSYCHO on Chris, pummeling her repeatedly until his friends show up. Notable as the one time in the ENTIRE series where Haru loses his temper. This outburst of mega proportions not only caused Hana to wet herself but also let his teammates know that he is NOT one to have ANYONE in his family fucked with.
  • Bifauxnen: Sera wears the male uniform, though she makes no secret of her gender, and earns a bunch of fangirls for it.
  • Non Sequitur Episode: "The Adventures of the Strange ChibiCures" has a shitload of gags featuring chibi versions of characters, including Sera overusing "Uruchai! Uruchai! Uruchai!!!", Haru's femininity being grossly exaggerated (and he's as feminine as possible in the main story as it is), and Hana shouting "MOVIE!" in a crowded firehouse (as a legal inverse alternative to shouting "FIRE!" in a crowded theatre, which is highly illegal in most theatres across the country).
  • Bokukko: Hana always uses "boku" when referring to herself. Sera decides to go vulgar and use "ore" frequently.
  • Boobs of Steel: Hana's boobs are big enough to show under her top during ballet class. Sera's bust size grows massively as Cure Kyuketsu.
  • Boxed Crook: Kyoko is on parole as of episode 23; part of her parole involves becoming a Cure and attending school at Strange Junior High.
  • Bring My Brown Pants: Hana actually wets herself at the sight of Haru after Chris presses his Berserk Button (good thing Hana always avoids skirts, this incident being no exception), which results in this charming dialogue:

Hana: Oh my God... lucky for me I wasn't wearing any underwear today.
Yumi: Seriously, Hana, did you have to reveal such unnecessary and vulgar information about yourself?

Hana: I actually forgot to put my underwear on today, I was in such a hurry to get to school.

Yuki: Look on the bright side, Hana, at least you won't have to put up with soiled panties.

  • Bullet Dancing: Cure Ramen provides what may be the most balletic example ever when Yoruno fires at her feet during his final fight in episode 34.
  • Celebrity Voice Actor: There's a few, including Emma Watson as the voice of Cure Kyuketsu, Bonnie Wright as the voice of Kyoko, Rupert Everett as the voice of Yoruno, and Ahmed Best as the voice of Skye.
  • Clingy Costume: Haru says he only removes his tights when he's about to get wet (e.g. for a bath).
  • Color Coded for Your Convenience: Unlike most of the girls in his ballet class, Haru's leotard and tutu are colored pink, because Real Men Wear Pink. Literally.
    • During the town festival, Haru, Yuki, and Yumi wear color-coded yukata, and Haru wears his usual white tights underneath. As for Sera and Hana, they wear color-coded umanori hakama that look decidedly more masculine.
  • Cool Car: Sera's 1990 Nissan Skyline, choptopped into a four-door convertible and given as many factory extras as Sera. He's usually called Skye.
  • Cosplay: Hana says during the School Festival episode that she got her costume for the Maid Cafe from a cosplay shop. She selected a black gakuran for the occasion. Haru and Hana also cosplay in pairs in one episode. Haru's outfit is a standard variation of the cosplay, while Hana's outfit is more tomboyish. In order of appearance:
    • Meido (their respective school festival outfits make a comeback)
    • Playboy Bunny (Hana's is two-piece, incorporates short shorts, eschews the fishnet tights, and swaps stilettos for sandals)
    • Hello, Nurse! (Hana's outfit closer resembles a male doctor's outfit, though)
    • Qipao (Hana wears a different Chinese outfit consisting of a loose jacket and trousers)
    • Fairytale Wedding Dress (Hana's outfit is a traditional modern-day wedding outfit for male royalty, complete with royal blue sash across the chest)
    • Elegant Gothic Lolita (Hana's eschews the puffy skirt in favor of equally frilly pants)
  • Crosscast Role: Sera has played a boy in all drama club productions, and Hana dances as the Nutcracker Prince in a local production of The Nutcracker (and, as always, she gets paired with Haru, who dances as Maria) in the second of two Christmas Episodes.
  • Crossdresser: Hana actually doesn't do this much, outside of wearing a hybrid uniform to school and a white sleeveless top and black leggings to ballet class, but simply prefers slacks even when she isn't crossdressing.
  • Cybernetics Eat Your Soul: Averted with Sera/Cure Kyuketsu.
  • Dance Battler: Cure Maso's costume looks quite balletic in design, and he incorporates ballet into his fighting style. Cure Ramen is a similar example, only this time it's just her fighting style that's balletic and not her costume.
  • Every Proper Lady Should Curtsy: Haru flat-out abuses this trope as a male maiden. Yumi also does this several times.
  • Evil Is Sexy: Kyoko's outfit as Cure Fatale. Subverted, as Kyoko is no longer evil by the time she becomes a Cure.
  • Fangirl Japanese: From episode 6 and several others: "Urusai! Urusai! Urusai!!!" Notable in that it actually carries over to the English dub from the Japanese original word for word.
  • Fan Service: While the scene itself isn't sexy, as Haru prepares for the gala in episode 20 a couple of family maids nearly twice as old as he is help him put on his dress for the occasion (complete with corset), and their dialogue includes some Innocent Innuendo.
  • Gender Blender Name: Haru.
  • The Glasses Come Off: Played straight with Cure Maso until episode 24 (when Maso wears glasses post-transformation for the first time); averted with Cure Kyuketsu whenever she wears glasses during a transformation.
  • Heel Face Turn: Kyoko in episode 23. Presumably, she heel-faced during her prison reformation, but this is first shown when she unexpectedly shows up to aid the Cures.
  • Hell-Bent for Leather: Cure Kyuketsu's costume includes a sleeveless black leather jacket.
  • Hey, It's That Voice!: Hey, isn't Cure Kyuketsu's English voice actress the same as that of Princess Pea?
  • Hot Chick in a Badass Suit: Sera and Hana's formalwear.
  • If It's You It's Okay: By the time Haru first sets foot inside Strange Junior High, it's well known the new kid's actually a male maiden, and he quickly becomes popular. Actually, Strange Junior High absolutely prohibits discrimination against male maidens—a prohibition designed to protect the male maidens in the student body and that's been in place ever since public knowledge of male maidens attending Strange Junior High came about from a gangraping of a male maiden by some female students four years after the school was founded. When the dean found out about it, he learned that several male maidens were attending as well. With the intention of ensuring harmony amongst the student body, the dean immediately passed an edict prohibiting any act that would make life hell for the male maiden population and officially grouping male maidens among the females, with the revelation of the presence of a male maiden to follow from the staff before the male maiden starts attending the school to make sure the other students are prepared. On average, about three or four male maidens start attending the school each year, and since the edict all were popular on some level, though Haru and a few other male maidens have been more popular than the rest.
    • After he spares her life in their final battle, Kyoko dials down her disrespect of him and starts to soften up on her views on male maidens.
  • In-Series Nickname: Hana always, without exception, calls Haru "Harls" out of affection.
  • Japanese School Uniform: Strange Junior High is hellbent on making most of its girls (and any male maidens that might attend) look as cute as possible, with a sailor blouse with pink collar coupled with a pink skirt worn over crinoline. The rest of its boys (as well as Sera) wear a comparatively conservative business suit-style uniform with a blue blazer and tie. Hana wears a cross between both uniforms just because she's intensely tomboyish. In gym class, both genders actually wear shorts, even most of the girls (whose gym shorts actually resemble shorts instead of bloomers). The girls just wear shorter shorts than the boys (and Sera) do.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Kyoko becomes this following her Heel Face Turn.
  • Leotard of Power: Haru's dance class outfit, as well as his outfit as Cure Maso. Yumi wears a red one as Cure Zombie.
  • Lighter and Softer: Compared to the author's other three fanworks, that is. This get to the point where it's family friendly enough to almost be rated PG. Almost.
  • Magic Dance: Cure Maso's signature attack involves him doing rapid and repeated pirouettes with his arms in the fifth position. After a few seconds, a magic beam comes out of his chest and hits the enemy. He even calls this move "Pretty Cure Magic Dance"!
  • Magic Skirt: The crinoline under the female uniform's skirt was designed to avoid any possible Panty Shot, especially with some of the students (both male and female) being letches. Doesn't mean there haven't been upskirt shots of Haru (though none have ever successful at being a Panty Shot).
  • Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: Haru and Sera, as well as (especially during ballet class) Haru and Hana.
    • Shin Nakao invokes this trope when he pairs Hana with Haru for each end-of-week pas de deux. Hana ends up dancing the boys' part each time.
  • The Masquerade: Averted; everyone at Strange Junior High knows that there are male maidens among them, including the staff that runs the school. In fact, the school prohibits discrimination of male maidens and officially groups them with the female student body. One male maiden (specifically, Haru) is taking ballet lessons in fourth period, three make up half the rhythmic gymnastics squad, four are in the Drama Club, and another leads the Student Council. In fact, all iterations of the Student Council have had a male maiden on the Council.
  • Meganekko: Haru, except during ballet sessions (that changes around the halfway point, though) and in Cure form (also changes at the same time; is his ballet training connected to his Cure form?). Sera, too, whenever she feels like it. In her case, though, the glasses DON'T come off if she becomes a Cure while wearing them. Hana also wears glasses during the School Festival.
  • Meido: Haru's homeroom does a Maid Cafe for the School Festival. And yes, even Hana participates. She just wears a white apron over a black gakuran.
  • Modesty Shorts: Worn by Cure Necro.
  • Nonuniform Uniform: Hana wears a hybrid uniform to school. Haru also wears pink bloomers and white tights with his gym uniform unlike most of the girls, who wear actual shorts and have bare legs.
  • Not Using the Z Word: The English title of the fifth episode.
  • Of Corsets Sexy: Cure Kyuketsu wears a yellow corset with her costume, and Haru wears a pink corset with his casual outfit.
  • Ojou: Haru comes from a rich family. He winds up as a male maiden because his parents got him cute pink dresses for him thinking he'd be born a girl. When the truth comes out, they don't want the stuff they bought to go to waste, so they had him wear them. Seeing he enjoyed wearing them, they got him more girly clothes, and to this day he considers himself a male maiden.
  • Pettanko: Sera. Usually. Her rack enlarges in Cure form.
  • Pietà Plagiarism: Done by a boy dressed as a young ballerina (Cure Maso) with a Bifauxnen (Sera) after the latter gets blown up toward the end of episode 1.
  • Pimped-Out Dress: Haru's formalwear.
  • Pink Girl, Blue Boy: The school uniform design for Strange Junior High resembles this. However, there are several students so far that don't conform to this standard: Haru and the other male maidens wear the female uniform, Sera wears the male uniform, and Hana, while she does wear the female uniform's sailor blouse, always wears the male uniform's black pants.
  • Playboy Bunny: Parodied in one episode by Hana, who wears a green strapless, midriff-baring top and green shorts (with the standard-issue cottontail attached) along with the bunny ears, bowtie, and cuffs. Being who she is, she winds up with bare legs, and she wears sandals instead of stilettos.
  • Playing Against Type: Hey, isn't that the Queen of Tsundere as the voice of a Bifauxnen?
  • Precision F-Strike: Unusually, the author sticks to mild profanity this time around, except for a few scenes:
    • In episode 2, Sera says "Son of a bitch... my head's still hurting a little" as she walks into the school building in the first scene.
    • In episode 8, after Kyoko's supposed immortality is revealed, Cure Kyuketsu says, "Holy shit..."
    • In episode 10, Sera tells Kyoko, who trespassed onto the Nagato mansion while she and the other Cures were visiting, "You're on private property. FUCK."
    • In episode 41, Haru gets his only swear word EVER when Yuki tries to reason with him as he beats the shit out of Chris for petrifying his father and he yells, "BACK OFF! I'M TRYING TO SHOW THIS WITCH THAT I AM NOT ONE TO HAVE ANYONE IN MY FAMILY FUCKED WITH!" Upon hearing this, Hana, despite having wet herself after seeing Haru's outburst earlier in the same scene, runs to Haru and does the Bright Slap on him to knock some sense into him just as he's about to punch Chris in the chest and possibly put a hole through it.
  • Product Placement: In episode 14, Kyoko sends a billboard crashing onto the Cures. Cure Kyuketsu has them scatter out of the way as it comes crashing down. Guess what's on the billboard?

YAHOOOOOO-OOO!

Hana: I told the ballet master for fourth period I'd wear the standard issue ballet slippers, but not the rest of the outfit! When the school tailor got my outfit ready the next day, it wound up being what most of you boys wear in this class, just as I wanted.

  • Red Boxing Gloves: As Sera is driving Skye in episode 6, she gets tired of his snarking and punches it. She's nearly punched back by a cartoon version of this trope that Skye unleashes on her in retaliation:

Skye: Don't make me go De La Hoya on you!
[Sera frantically searches for a button that'll shut Skye up]
Sera: Urusai! Urusai! Urusai!!!

  • Red Shirt: Surprisingly, Sera's the Cure that comes closest to becoming one—and right before she gets her powers, yet! (Not even Lina Eastwood, who dies multiple times, comes close to Red Shirt territory.)
  • Sailor Fuku: Most of the girls (including Hana, who wears a hybrid uniform) wear a sailor blouse with a pink collar.
  • Shana Clone: Sera, although she's taller than most examples (at 5'6"), and she's a Bifauxnen, to boot! She even lets out the obligatory "Urusai! Urusai! Urusai!!!" when sufficiently irritated.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: Done with all the Cures at the time on any formal occasion. While Haru is a Gender Flipped example, he winds up in a fancy dress each time (always pairing the dress with his usual glasses for added cuteness). Of course, then we have Sera and Hana, both of who wear tuxedos to each formal gathering. Sera even has her own hair combed back and tied into a short ponytail!
  • Shirtless Scene: Sera gets a few, since her cyborg form lacks a chest covering and thus exposes the gizmos inside her torso. However, her alter-ego Cure Kyuketsu cannot receive any, since she has a chest covering that comes complete with Boobs of Steel.
    • Averted in the Beach Episode, where she wears a tight, waterproof white T-shirt designed to protect her gizmos from getting wet. It gets paired with gold and blue swim trunks.
  • Shorttank: Hana. Her parents felt like one girly activity wouldn't hurt, so she decided to apply to Strange Junior High's fourth period ballet class. Following a compromise, she wears the male ballet uniform, paired with the girls' standard-issue footwear (never mind that she's got Boobs of Steel which would be noticeable under her top anyway).
  • Shout-Out: Sera's yellow T-shirt reads "KONO KUSOMUSHI".
    • Also, in episode 14, after taking on a bunch of demons, she tells her friends, "You beat a man, they call you tough. I beat an army. You can call me The Street Fighter." Even the title references the film: "Beating an Army! Sera's Killer Fist" (the first half is part of the tagline, and the second half references the Japanese title).
    • Haru himself can be considered a Shout-Out to Hanae Mitsukawa in that he's a very demure kid who studies ballet and always wears glasses except during ballet sessions and in Cure form. Although, he did wear glasses full-time before attending Strange Junior High and starts wearing them during ballet sessions again around the halfway point of the series.
  • Skirt Over Slacks: Yuki wears this with her casual outfit.
  • Stocking Filler: All Cures in this series wear white tights with their Cure costumes, even if any of them wear more masculine-looking Cure outfits than their comrades in arms (as is the case with Cures Kyuketsu and Ramen).
  • Super Gender Bender: Averted with Cure Maso, who remains male.
  • Superheroes Wear Tights: Word of God says white tights are standard-issue with the battle attire for all the Cures, even if two of them (namely, Cures Kyuketsu and Ramen) otherwise wear more boyish battle attire than their comrades.
  • Taken for Granite: Fumihiko Nagato in episode 41. He gets better.
  • Tall, Dark and Bishoujo: Sera. She's actually a dirty blonde, but she's tall and has the fangirl horde necessary.
  • Tastes Like Diabetes: The Strange Junior High female uniform, which usually incorporates a cute-looking pink skirt over crinoline. Haru takes this trope Up to Eleven by adding white tights, Mary Janes, and glasses.
  • Tights Under Shorts: Worn by Cures Kyuketsu and Ramen. As for Cure Necro, she actually wears Tights Under Modesty Shorts.
    • The grade school Hana went to did use uniforms, but they were virtually identical. The girls just wore white tights under their shorts.
  • Trickster Twins: Yoshi and Hoshi, the resident Half-Identical Twins in the Nagato family. For example, from episode 10:

Hoshi: She's not Yoshi, I am!
Yoshi: Honestly, woman, you call yourself our mother?
Ai: Oh, I'm sorry, Hoshi.
Yoshi: I'm only joking, I am Yoshi.

  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: Strange Junior High has gotten its fair share of male maidens since its inception; however, it wasn't until years later that the presence of male maidens amongst the school was made known; since then, all male maidens have been treated by the school as if they were actually girls, but their true gender is always revealed before they start attending just so that the student body is aware that a male maiden is going to the school. All have taken up feminine interests, and there's a second year and a couple of third year male maidens on the rhythmic gymnastics squad. In fact, half the squad is made of male maidens at the time the story takes place.
  • Vapor Wear: The reason why the black leggings worn by most boys (and Hana) during ballet class are made of a completely opaque material.
  • We Can Rebuild Him: Sera's fate at the end of episode 1.
  • Whole Costume Reference: The ballet uniform worn by most male ballet students as well as Hana closely resembles the outfits worn by Mytho and a male background student in Ahiru's class in Princess Tutu.
  • Wholesome Crossdresser: Haru and Sera. The former is the first male maiden to be a main character in a Pretty Cure story.
  • Who Wears Short Shorts?: Cure Kyuketsu's costume incorporates this, with the standard-issue white tights underneath.
    • Sera and Hana wear what the author calls a "bike swimsuit" for swim class in the summer, and Hana's casual swimsuit is two-piece and shorts-like, kind of like those worn by Shugo, Lina, Mikoto, Yasu, and a few others (Sera herself wears a T-shirt paired with swim trunks).
    • The girls (except for Sera, whose gym shorts are as long as the boys') and most male maidens wear this as part of their gym uniforms; however, Haru instead wears bloomers.
    • Hana wears green shorts when parodying the Playboy Bunny trope in her own tomboyish way in one episode.
      • She also wears cuffed jean shorts during the summer.
  • Would Hit a Girl: The normally chivalrous Haru will gladly assault anyone who actively harms one of his family, even if said assailant is female. Fortunately, he Wouldn't Hit a Girl otherwise. He just made an exception of Chris for making an attempt on his father's life in what can be considered a reverse Papa Wolf moment for him.
