Kickassia/Characters
The cast of the That Guy With The Glasses second anniversary special Kickassia.
The Nostalgia Critic
- Ax Crazy: He buys 20 tons of dynamite so, in the event of someone trying to usurp him, he can blow up the entire nation.
- Big Bad: Is increasingly portrayed as one up until the final episode, where everyone turns against him.
- Break the Haughty
- The Caligula
- Combat Pragmatist: In his fight with Insano.
- Drunk with Power: We find out later that his desperation for power, any kind of power, is what made him try the takeover in the first place.
- Evil Sounds Deep
- Evil Overlord
- Evil Versus Evil: When he fights Dr. Insano
- Fan Nickname: N. Bison.
- Glad I Thought of It: Constantly does this to Phelous.
- Humiliation Conga: The final episode is his.
- Jerkass Woobie: The Jerkass part more pronounced than usual, although - starting with part 4 - he got at least one sympathy-inducing scene per episode until part 6's Humiliation Conga.
- Large Ham
- Power Floats: Parodied.
Dr. Insano: "You do realise you're just standing on your tippy-toes, don't you?"
- Not So Harmless: In his reviews, he's a hopeless antisocial loser who never gets his way. Here...not so much.
- Shock and Awe
- Sociopathic Hero: Although he's decidedly less of a hero after the takeover.
- Tear Jerker: To some, both the scene with Ma-Ti (" A president has no friends") and the shocked-puppy look after he accidentally kills Santa Christ.
- Took a Level in Jerkass: The reason why Team TGWTG rebels against him. That and the dynamite.
- Trigger Happy: Comes back to bite him in the ass when he panics and shoots Santa Christ.
- Villain Protagonist
- With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: Political power, but it still counts. As he settles more into his role as leader, his sanity slips further and further away until he decides to rig Kickassia with 20 tonnes of dynamite.
Kevin Baugh
- Apple of Discord: When undermining the government of Kickassia.
- As Himself
- Authority Equals Asskicking
- Clark Kenting: No one is fooled by Baugh's disguise (see Paper-Thin Disguise below), but eventually they decide to play along with it.
- Cloudcuckoolander: Implied.
- Hero Antagonist: In the end Baugh's role amounts to protecting his home and trying to rightfully get back something that was taken from him.
- Magnificent Bastard
- Paper-Thin Disguise: Lampshaded repeatedly.
Nostalgia Critic: All right President Baugh, hand over Molossia and nobody gets hurt.
Baugh: I'm not the President. I'm Fritz Von Baugh, Minister of Making Things Orderly.
The Cinema Snob: But... it's so obviously you!
- In Real Life, he has several other personae, including Paddy O'Baugh, Achmed Al-Baugh, Angus MacBaugh, and Juan de la Baugh, who make up his cabinet.
- Psychotic Smirk: Does this at several points as he sows discord among the invaders.
- The Quiet One/The Stoic
- Split Personality: Debatable. But he seems surprisingly sincere at the end when (under the Fritz Von Baugh personality) he insists that he's not the President even as the group is giving the nation back to him.
- Teleport Spam
The Nostalgia Chick
- Bitch in Sheep's Clothing
- The Baroness: Parodied. She calls herself "the Rulenatrix of Kickassia" before her Evil Laugh.
- Combat Stilettos: Quite literally. A stiletto heel is her Weapon of Choice.
- Devil in Plain Sight: Critic's not the only one who doesn't realize she's nowhere near as nice as she's pretending to be.
- The Dragon: She's officially the Vice-President and Number Two after taking over, it can be argued she's something of a Co-Dragon with Film Brain.
- Dragon with an Agenda/ The Starscream: She's literally the Nostalgia Critic's Number Two and is very obviously trying to overthrow him.
- Evil Chancellor: Of the Scheming Vice President variety. She spends most of the special trying to off the Nostalgia Critic.
- Evil Laugh: In part 6, when she attempts to claim Kickassia as her own.
- No Celebrities Were Harmed: She seems awfully similar to a certain other female Vice President (candidate), doesn't she?
- Obfuscating Stupidity
- The Starscream
- Stepford Smiler
- Straw Feminist: She dips into this a little as "Nostalgia Palin", blaming people thinking she's now an idiot on prejudice.
Linkara
- Big No: At Marz Gurl's Disney Death.
- Evil Laugh: In part 6.
- Face Palm: His reaction to everyone wanting to use Dr. Insano to attack the Critic.
- FBI Agent: His initial position in the government is as head of the FBI equivalent, and he's quite enamored with stealth and surprise.
- Flash Step/Master of Illusion: Hard to tell which one it was intended to be, but he uses it once in Part 3 and then it never appears again.
- Heroic Comedic Sociopath: In his "Patkara" persona.
- I Am Not Spock: A lot of people apparently thought that Linkara was switching into an Ensign Munro persona when he donned his Starfleet uniform; Lewis denied this on his Twitter, saying that it was just Linkara in a Starfleet uniform.
- I Don't Like You and You Don't Like Me: To Angry Joe in part 5.
Linkara: Joe, Joe, Joe, I know we've had our differences in the past...
Angry Joe: We have?
Linkara: Yes. I don't like you very much.
Angry Joe: (sadly) Oh...
- I Know Mortal Kombat: His tactical mastery comes from having seen the film Patton over a hundred times.
- The Hero: Subverted. In the videos he made following Kickassia, he portrays himself as one; calling himself "the liberator of Kickassia". Two things should be noted, however: first that a Selective Memory is totally in-character for Linkara, and second, that while technically he helped liberate Kickassia from the Critic, he was still part of a group that invaded Molassia for no reason and took it over from its rightful ruler.
- Large Ham: He is virtually a Straight Man through most of the story, aside from Marz Gurl's near death and when he plays Patton. Then he becomes hammy with a side of ham. (Now with extra ham).
- Manly Tears: After MarzGurl's Disney Death.
- Only Sane Man: When it comes to the unleashing of Insano at least. He's the only one who objects to what is obviously a doomed plan. Granted this is partially just because he'd rather use his own attack plan.
- He's also the earliest objector to the entire invasion of Kickassia, but ends up going along with it.
- Near the end of part 6 he temporarily seems to abandon his sanity and tries to declare himself ruler of Kickassia
- The Smart Guy: He clearly fancies himself as one, trying to set himself up as the Only Sane Man and The Strategist, although by the last episode it's clear that he was evolving into an Evil Genius.
- The Strategist: Thanks to the power of Patton.
Spoony
- Battle Cry: "WOLVERINES!!"
- Berserk Button: He tries to avoid the topic of Dr. Insano as much as he can, but when people press him about the Mad Scientist he responds with some truly hamtastic Big No's.
- Red Oni, Blue Oni: The blue to Dr. Insano's red.
- This Spoony is a lot calmer and quieter in this series (unless he's being pestered about Dr. Insano) compared to how he usually acts. He also counts as this towards Dr. Insano.
- Catch Phrase: "... But that was the past."
- Chewing the Scenery: Those curtains must have been delicious.
- Jekyll and Hyde: He's the Jekyll to Dr. Insano.
- Large Ham
- Nightmare Fuel: His transformation into Dr. Insano.
- Painful Transformation: Into Dr. Insano.
- Tear Jerker: Some see his storyline as this.
- Unexplained Recovery: He changes back from Insano without any explanation except "I got better."
- The Woobie
Dr. Insano
- Ax Crazy
- Badass Bookworm
- Battle Cry: "SCIENCE!"
- Buffy-Speak: "Well, I'm sciencier!"
- Cartoonish Supervillainy: Par for the course when it comes to Insano, really.
- Chronic Backstabbing Disorder
"I am altering the deal, pray I do not alter it any further... ooh, another alteration! You didn't pray hard enough!"
- Combat Pragmatist
- Complete Monster: Subverted in a hilarious manner. His introduction is Nightmare Fuel-worthy, the character himself is described as a megalomaniac who wants to rule the world, he's constantly associated with madness and discord, Spoony himself is terrified at the possibility that he could break loose and vehemently refuses to "give in to the madness"... Everything that we hear about this guy indicates that Dr. Insano is not playing around anymore. As it turns out, this was all hyperbole for the sake of Rule of Funny. He's still a Cartoonish Supervillain.
- Continuity Snarl: This series added yet another explanation as to who Dr. Insano is. That didn't stop some trying to piece it all together, though.
- Crosses the Line Twice In the aftermath of his fight with N. Bison: "I feel like a puppy that's been raped by a bulldozer."
- Evil Is Hammy
- Evil Laugh
- Evil Versus Evil: When he fights The Nostalgia Critic.
- For Science!!: It's Insano. What did you expect?
- Jekyll and Hyde: The Hyde to Spoony's Jekyll.
- Large Ham: His first appearance includes mad cackling and dramatic lightning. It only goes uphill from there.
- Mad Scientist: Emphasis on "mad" this time around, since he rather surprisingly doesn't use any of his patented gadgets.
- Red Oni, Blue Oni: The red to Spoony's blue.
- Sealed Inside a Person-Shaped Can: His "can" is Spoony.
- In the Bayeux Tapestry style credits, he can be seen leaping out of the crumpled husk of Spoony's body.
- Shock and Awe: Like in Spoony's own videos, Insano has lightning-powers that he can use through thanks to the power of SCIENCE.
- Sociopathic Hero/Psycho for Hire
- Summon Bigger Fish
- Super-Powered Evil Side
Phelous
- Nightmare Fuel: The fridge-slamming. Doug was actually pretty scared.
Doug: (breaking character) ... you're really going to kill me, aren't you?
- Beleaguered Assistant
- Deadpan Snarker
- Genre Savvy
- Hypercompetent Sidekick: When it comes to coming up with ideas and policies for the Kickassia government.
- My Name Is Not Phallus
- Only Sane Man
- Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: Your Mileage May Vary, but he seems to be a lot more accepted by the fans after this special.
- The Smart Guy: He's the one who comes up with the Nostalgia Critic's better policies.
- Surrounded by Idiots
The Cinema Snob
- Even Evil Has Standards: Even he thinks playing Michael Bolton music to drive the Critic out of the government house is going too far.
- Evil Laugh: In part 6.
- Genre Savvy: Within seconds of being presented with all the worries the others have about N. Bison, he asks exactly how many of them have been "talking to that Baugh guy," seeing right through Baugh's apparent plot. Subverted in that The Critic really has gone that crazy.
- Glasses Pull: In the Lock and Load Montage. Then he spins dramatically and puts them back on.
- Hypercompetent Sidekick: He takes care of Kickassia's economy and gets really worried when it don't live up to the standards the group has. He tries to report it to the Nostalgia Critic about it but gets ignored, much to his frustration.
- Non-Action Guy: Is hilariously ineffective invading Molossia, and doesn't even try to resist his arrest and banishment.
- Oh Crap: When he sees how crazy Critic has become, and seconds before Film Brain springs a trap on him.
- Put on a Bus: Was banished in part 4.
- The Smart Guy/The Evil Genius: Realized the depth of the problems in Kickassia's government as early as Part 3 and was the only one really trying to do something about it. When he returns from banishment in part 6, he makes sure to take care of the Critic's dynamite first, rather than just rushing in and hoping to be able to kill or disable Critic before he can use it like everyone else.
- Smug Snake: It's not really played up, but it's there.
Those with brains usually have power over the brainless.
- Straight Man: To most of the rest of the cast.
- Surrounded by Idiots
- Tear Jerker: His banishment is sometimes considered to be this.
Film Brain
- Adult Child: Well, he is the youngest of the cast, but still...
- Base Breaker: He's either hilarious and adorable or just annoying. There don't seem to be any middling opinions.
- Battle Cry: "SYMBOLISM!"
- Big No: When he realizes that Santa Christ is dead.
- Cloudcuckoolander
- Costume Copycat: He wears a black jacket and a white shirt, just like the Nostalgia Critic.
- Defector From Decadence: In part 5, after Santa Christ dies.
- The Dragon: To the Nostalgia Critic.
- Heel Face Turn
- Heel Realization
- Keet
- Moe
- Playing Against Type: Inverted, actually. He has said in commentaries that in reality he is a lot closer to his Kickassia personality than his one in Bad Movie Beatdown.
- Professional Butt-Kisser: Tries to become this in the new government.
Marz Gurl
- Action Girl
- Drill Sergeant Nasty
- Ship Tease: With Linkara in part 2, even though it was Played for Laughs.
Linkara: * cradling Marz Gurl after she's hit with a missile* Take comfort in my masculine arms!
Angry Joe
- Ax Crazy
- The Big Guy/The Brute: As head of the military and the guy packing all the weaponry.
- Cut His Heart Out with a Spoon
- Firing in the Air a Lot
- Heroic Comedic Sociopath
- Hot-Blooded
- Imperial Stormtrooper Marksmanship Academy
- Large Ham
- More Dakka
- Offhand Backhand: Poor 8-Bit Mickey!
- Violence Is the Only Option
- When All You Have Is a Hammer: Tries to use his guns as a solution to every problem. Including the Insurmountable Chain Link Fence:
Angry Joe: *Fires at fence* IT'S NO USE!!! THE BULLETS ARE JUST GOING THROUGH THE HOLES!!! *Continues firing at fence*
Handsome Tom
- Butt Monkey
- Demoted to Extra: He had a prominent role the first anniversary brawl. Here, he barely has a speaking role.
- Third Person Person: "This is a sad day for Handsome Tom."
- You Are A Flagpole, Charlie Brown: And a horse, too!
8-Bit Mickey
- Ascended Extra: Has more lines than you'd think, especially considering Tom's lack of importance.
- Butt Monkey
- Manly Tears: Averted. He full-on breaks down sobbing when Santa Christ dies.
- My Friends and Zoidberg: "And 8-Bit Mickey!"
Jew Wario
- Badass Longcoat: As Yanki J.
- Batter Up: While briefly under his Yanki J personality.
- Catchphrase: I like it!
- Cloudcuckoolander
- Invisibility
- Think of the Children
Lee
- Barehanded Blade Block
- Cloudcuckoolander: Due to never having been 3-D before.
- Hulking Out
- No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: On President Baugh. He later tries to do this to the Critic and is successful for awhile, until he experiences his first ever Groin Attack.
- One-Winged Angel: "It's 3D Lee!"
- Pint-Sized Powerhouse
- Sense Freak
- Trailers Always Spoil: His 3-D transformation.
Bennett The Sage
- Artistic License: Biology: He's a bad doctor. Let's leave it at that.
Bennett The Sage: Heh, what do you know? The chart was upside down.
- Ax Crazy
- Brick Joke: The reason he deduced that while holding an Uzi, one will not die, apart from Insane Troll Logic, is that in the previous chapter, he survived one of President Baugh's cannon blasts just by ducking while holding an Uzi.
- Cut His Heart Out with a Spoon: His rather graphic description of how to kill the Critic makes the cast Double Take when they hear it. Try visualising it.
- Mythology Gag: Given the kind of fanfics he reviews, is it any wonder he came out with it?
- The outtakes have plenty more suggestions like that, including the surprisingly simple I say we kill him.
- I Just Shot Marvin in the Face: Uses the barrel of his Uzi to wipe away a tear during Cinema Snob's banishment.
- Insane Troll Logic: Apparently, when holding an Uzi, you will not die. Although granted, Sage probably can't find any other explanation for why he is alive after a near miss from President Baugh's cannon.
Benzaie
- Companion Cube: Beary.
- Death Glare: Linkara better not be a Nazi!
- Funny Foreigner: "What do you mean you can't understand me? I'm French, that's the language of love. If you can't understand me, you can't understand love."
- The Heart
- Get a Hold of Yourself, Man!: Does this to Spoony. Definitely a parody.
- Tear Jerker: His farewell to Beary. Don't worry, he's Not Quite Dead.
Paw Dugan
- Ascended Extra: Although still small, compared with his role in the first anniversary Brawl (where he had two lines), his role here is considerably expanded.
- Captain Ersatz: Of Howard Stern and other shock jocks. This is his official role in the Kickassian government.
- Cool and Unusual Punishment: Suggests playing Michael Bolton music to drive the Critic out of the Government House. This evokes an Even Evil Has Standards reaction from everyone.
- Genre Savvy: He believes that he's doing the people of Kickassia a favour since, "when people agree with angry show hosts on the radio it makes them feel better about themselves."
Lord Kat
- Hilarious Outtakes: Including a bit where he ad-libs how the Kickassia government will make its money from pimping out Benzaie in Vegas.
- Real Life Writes the Plot: It was originally planned for him to have a much larger role, but the commentaries revealed that his part was trimmed down to almost nothing due to his injuries during the first day of shooting.
- Straight Man: From what little we see and commentary hints, he was possibly going to be one of the straightest characters. For example, while most of the cast was struggling with and climbing over the Insurmountable Waist High Fence, Lord Kat was simply going to take two steps over and go through the gate.
Ma-Ti from Captain Planet
- Because Destiny Says So / You Can't Fight Fate: "You can't change your destiny, you can only chooooose to meeet iiit!"
- The Conscience: Judging by their relationship there and how Suburban Knights seems to be in canon with Kickassia, he was most likely just a personification of N. Bison's good side.
- Get a Hold of Yourself, Man! / What the Hell, Hero?: Tries to get across to N. Bison what a douche he's being.
- Large Ham
- One-Scene Wonder
Santa Christ
- Back from the Dead: Doubly subverted when the Clap Your Hands If You Believe sequence fails, but he comes back after three days anyway.
- Base Breaker: He's either way cool and a fitting part of the special or a God Mode Sue who should never have even existed. Whatever you thought of him before, Kickassia won't change your mind.
- Deus Ex Machina
- Killed Off for Real: Subverted!
- The Messiah: Well duh.
- Only Sane Man: And, unlike many other examples in this series, he stays that way through virtue of never being corrupted by any potential gain of power.
- Team Dad: Hugs Film Brain, gives Nostalgia Chick Othello and gets the whole group to admit they were wrong to take over Molossia and agree to go back to their online shows.
