Gekkostate

Renton Thurston

The main male protagonist. An ordinary boy bored with his ordinary life and with dreams of becoming a professional lifter, Renton's life is turned upside down when Eureka enters his life. He is one of the only people besides Eureka herself who can pilot the series's signature LFO, the Nirvash typeZERO.

  • Butt Monkey: For much of the first arc. Done intentionally by the crew of the Gekko. Eventually grows out of it via Character Development.
  • Child Soldier: In The Movie (though he joins willingly.)
  • Determinator:
    • In the manga, he gets shot in the gut and stabbed by enemy soldiers, but managed to carry Eureka around for a bit before passing out and later pilots the Nirvash while still injured.
    • He's even more of a Determinator in the movie, causing the Nirvash to evolve into its final form, rescuing Eureka from an EIZO attack, and then defeating Holland (piloting the Devilfish, no less,) all while bleeding to death from a gunshot wound to the stomach.
    • Said Determinator Movie moment gets reenacted in Super Robot Wars Z 2: Hakai-Hen.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Though it doesn't come up much, Renton is a very competent mechanic. He disassembles Dominic's bike in mere moments to blackmail him, knowing Dominic couldn't fix it without him.
  • Heroic BSOD: Threw up after his My God, What Have I Done? moment below and ended up running away from Gekkostate for a while. In the manga, after Holland reveals the truth about his father.

  • My God, What Have I Done?: Renton snaps after literally "disarming" an enemy pilot, which was more like "obliterating", as the only recognizable part of the guy was his arm. The rest was just paste with some organs in it. And seeing as Renton is generally a rather naive teenager, him crushing the poor bastard into an organ-filled paste was kinda... unexpected, but it doesn't stop there; the poor kid saw a wedding ring on the disembodied arm. As if killing someone wasn't enough, he also widowed someone.
  • Naive Newcomer
  • Parental Abandonment: Renton's father is presumed dead, and his mother is never mentioned.
    • Well...about his father... In a Mind Screw bit when Renton and Eureka "enter" the Scub Coral's mental world (or something like that), Renton meets his sister and father. Now, how much someone that exists only in that realm can be considered "alive" or "dead" is up for grabs.
  • Raised by Grandparents
  • The Chosen One: A literal one. Eureka chose him by falling in love with him.
  • Took a Level in Badass: He was throwing up in the cockpit in the first episodes. By the end, savior of the world.

Eureka

The main female protagonist. Eureka is a mysterious girl with an affinity for machines who has trouble opening up to other people until she crash-lands her LFO, the Nirvash, on Renton's house.

Talho Yuki

The pilot of Gekkostate's ship, the Gekko, and cover-girl for their magazine Ray=out. In a relationship with Holland.

Holland Novak

The leader of Gekkostate. Holland was once a member of the military, but defected and formed an anti-government movement. To the public, he is known as the world's top amateur lifter and is Renton's longtime idol. He pilots the Terminus typeR909.

  • Aloof Big Brother: Acts as this towards Renton
  • Anti-Villain: In The Movie, along with the rest of movie!Gekkostate. They're trying to find a way to save themselves from their rapid aging, and they're willing to use anyone to achieve that goal and stomp on anyone who gets in their way.
  • Badass
  • Bishounen: Mild case of this, despite his Perma-Stubble. Perma-Stubble which is all the more hilarious cause he's shown shaving in one episode.
  • Broken Pedestal: Mild case of this for Renton, who found Holland's image was somewhat more inflated than justified, even admitted by the man himself.
  • Character Development: He goes fromm a Jerkass Man Child to a mature, father-like figure to Renton.
  • Domestic Abuse: Slap the ignorant hero around, Holland! Such a great way to win his loyalty and impress your crew!
  • A Father to His Men: Takes a while, but he grows into this over the course of the series.
  • Good Is Not Nice
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Arguably the reason for some of his worst Jerkass moments. Once he gets over it, he is a much nicer guy.
  • Jerkass: At his worst moments.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: At his better moments.
  • Man Child: Immature in the way he deals with his anger.
  • Papa Wolf: Turns more and more into this for Eureka as the series goes on. See episode 38 for a particularly good example.
  • Sergeant Rock: Sure, Holland might be a MAJOR asshole at times, but he's respected and even liked by the Gekkostate crew because he's competent, wouldn't have them do something he wouldn't do himself, and despite his outward Jerkass, is rather concerned for their welfare.

  • Took a Level In Kindness: He is a lot less of a jerkass and much more laid back in the manga. He only hit Renton once, and he arguably deserved it at the time. In the anime, this is a major part of his Character Development.
    • Subverted in the movie, where he's a Jerkass all the way through, up until the very end.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: After everyone else fails to get through to Holland about his treatment of Renton, its Eureka's crushed and soft-spoken disappointment in him for what he's done that finally turns him around.
  • Villain Team-Up: The movie version does this With Aim Liard in Super Robot Wars Z 2: Hakai-Hen
  • Younger Than He Looks: Like the rest of movie!Gekkostate, movie!Holland is only 17, due to experiments causing him to age rapidly.

Stoner

Photographer and main editor of Ray=out. He was also a former member of the military and defected with Holland.

Maurice, Maeter, and Linck

Eureka's adopted children, who she took care of after she killed their parents during a military raid. They are fiercely protective of their "Mama" and like to play pranks on Renton, but warm up to him over time.

Hap

Second-in-command of the Gekkostate crew. One of the few people Holland confides his troubles with.

Moondoggie

The newest member of Gekkostate before Renton. Jealous of Renton, despite being viewed as a big brother figure by him.

  • Big Brother Mentor: Reluctantly towards Renton.
  • Butt Monkey: In an unusual take on the trope, he was the ship's official Butt Monkey before Renton arrived, and actually resents Renton from taking the position from him.
  • Meaningful Name: According to one of the definitions given by Urban Dictionary, a moondoggie is 1960s slang for a habitual marijuana user. Almost certainly deliberate given the series' large amounts of references to 60s counterculture (and the presence of a character named Stoner).
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: According to his license, his name is actually James Darren Emerson. Nobody ever calls him this.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Eventually becomes the pilot of the Gekko.


United Federation Force

Dominic Sorel

An elite officer in the U.F. Force and Dewey's confidant. He also has the unenviable job of looking after Anemone who, despite being on the receiving end of a very abusive relationship with her, he is actually fond of.

Dominic: Is "west" the direction of the hand you hold a fork with?

  • Punch Clock Villain
  • Orphan's Ordeal: Episode 44. It helps to explain why he's so devoted to Anemone - hers is the closest connection he has with another person.
  • Subordinate Excuse: While Anemone doesn't outrank him, it should be clear that he chose this position for something more than a good paycheque.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: A bit subtler than most, but still very naive about how the world and human relationships work.

Dewey Novak

The main antagonist. Once a disgraced military official following Holland's defection, he has risen to power with his maniacal devotion to "save" the world from the Coralians. Also Holland's older brother.

Anemone

Pilot of the Federation LFO, Nirvash typeTheEND. Prone to violent mood swings that can only be controlled through the use of lethal sedatives, she refuses to listen to anyone other than Dewey. Owns a strange badger-like pet named Gulliver.

Captain of the Federation flagship Izumo.

New Wave and New Vision Characters

Sumner Sturgeon

Voiced by: Hiro Shimono (JP), Sam Riegel (EN)

The male protagonist of the video game prequels New Wave and New Vision. After graduating New Wave Academy, a school for future military recruits, he and most of his friends joined the Sawyer Team KLF group. His beliefs and love for Ruri convince him to rebel against the military at the end of the first game, and deliver a captured Nirvash to Holland and Eureka.

In the second game, he, Ruri, and Moondoggie fight against the Azure group and corrupted members of the military, including some of Sumner's old friends, to prevent mass destruction.

  • The Cameo: Sumner and Ruri make a brief appearance in the anime.

Ruri

Voiced by: Michelle Ruff (EN)

Sumner's love interest. In New Wave, she left New Wave Academy after learning about the military's insidious motives. Although her efforts to rebel lead her to aligning with black market dealers, she eventually reunites with Sumner long enough to help him realize what path he should follow.

In New Vision, Ruri is able to meet Sumner again, and they (and Moondoggie) try to stop a military scheme that is driving their own pilots insane. After the conflict is over, she and Sumner remain together.

Steven Bisson

Voiced By: Liam O'Brien (EN, Uncredited)

One of Sumner's companions when he was a member of Sawyer Team. Between New Wave and New Vision, an experimental drug given to him by the military drives him insane, turning him into one of the main antagonists of the second game.

Axel Thurston

Renton's strict yet loving grandfather.

  • Crazy Prepared: In the manga, he tells Holland to go to work while throwing a wrench from his toolkit at his head that's specifically labeled "For Holland".

  • Go-Karting with Bowser: He and Dominic got along really well, even though Dominic was still on the villain team at the time. He even taught Dominic how to fix his bike, and Dominic promised to check up on his grandson. Then again, he never finds out what side Dominic was on at the time.

Charles and Ray Beams

A pair of mercenaries-for-hire and a loving couple. They hold a grudge against Holland and Gekkostate in general.

  • Battle Couple
  • Changeling Fantasy: They seem to provide an interesting take on this when they adopt Renton
  • Despair Event Horizon: Charles's death for Ray.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Played With the exception of trying to kill Renton twice, which she saw as a Mercy Kill in the event her attempt to capture and reason with him went wrong; she hesitates when she sees Maurice Maeter and Linck coming out of the brig, wondering why there are children aboard. As she expected only Gekkostate personal and Eureka. However it all goes to hell when they all call Eureka "Mama." As Ray refuses to accept a woman, who she views as a monster, to be a mother. It was the spark of her breakdown.
  • Forgotten Fallen Friend: Enemy, technically, but this trope is Averted either way. The characters who knew them show these two weren't easily forgotten.
  • Go Out With a Bang / Go Out with a Smile Charles does both. The former twice. When Holland empties a clip into Charles' abdomen and shows brief pity for his old friend, Ray gets the drop on him shooting him in the leg. The other time was with the help of Ray. Using his corpse as an explosive distraction to get her to escape.
  • Hotblooded Sideburns: Charles has them.
  • Mama Bear: Ray.
  • Neat Freak: Both keep their ship, the Swan, utterly spotless, which signifies Ray's Villainous Breakdown when she trashes the ship in her grief over losing Charles.
  • Papa Wolf: Charles.
  • Parental Substitute: For Renton when he ran away.
  • Punch Clock Villain: Nicer to Renton than the good guys...
    • However, they hate Eureka because Dewey has convinced them that she's to blame for Ray's infertility.
  • Shout-Out: Their names, to pianist Ray Charles and or designers Charles and Ray Eames
  • Tragic Monster: Ray embodies this as she believes the Seven Swell Effect caused her infertility. While her actions make her crazy and sadistic especially when it comes to Eureka, her reasons are very sad and sympathetic. Realizing that Eureka, the woman she deems responsible for her infertility, is an adoptive mother; was the spark of her breakdown. Losing Ray made her forgo her basic routine of keeping the ship spotless. Even trashing the place save for three neatly set plates and utensils on the table. When she attacks Gekko state using her ship and KLF's she's stoic while humming a bit from her favorite song "Get It By Your Hands." With the only thing breaking said stoicism is Renton trying to talk her down. However when Renton vows to protect Eureka, this makes her write him off as a lost cause, believing that Eurkea's possessed and consumed his soul. Which in turn causes her to attempt Kamikaze her Ship, The Swan into the Gekko in an attempt to kill herself and take Renton and Eureka with him. The former in hopes they'd be reunited in the afterlife. When Holland and The Gekko stop her, blowing the cock pit, she's left wounded searching until she finds her severed arm which has the wedding ring Charles gave her. Her only line post flashbacks in Episode 28 sums it all up. Her story while sad, makes her attempts just as scary.

Ray: It's far too late. For everything!! Renton? Eureka, the one you're there to protect; took every happy future away from your mama. Now it's time to take everything away FROM YOUR FUTURE EUREKA!!! Renton, you have been possessed by a horrible and dangerous monster. But it's alright. Mama will save you. And we'll all go together where CHARLES IS WAITING FOR US!!!

  • Villainous Breakdown: Ray loses it when Charles dies. It's heart-rending to see the aftermath of her utterly trashing the Swan in her grief. It gets worse when Renton states he'll fight her to stop her, in an effort to talk her down.
  • Yandere: Ray is a Mama Bear variety.
