Die for Our Ship/Playing With
Basic Trope: A character is hated by fans for getting in the way of their favourite pairing.
- Straight: Bob is in a Love Triangle with Plucky Action Girl Alice and Shrinking Violet Claire. Fans hate Claire, and either kill her off or turn her into a crazed Yandere in fanfics so Bob can be with Alice.
- Exaggerated: In a fanfic, Claire, Alice and every other female character who's ever so much as spoken to Bob are killed off so that he can end up with his attractive rival Prince Evulz.
- Justified:
- Claire is The Scrappy for reasons other than her position in the Love Triangle.
- Claire kills Alice in self-defence when Alice tries to Murder the Hypotenuse.
- Inverted:
- Claire dies in canon. Somebody writes a fanfic where she's brought back to life and paired up with Bob.
- Claire becomes much more popular with the fans when she and Bob become the Official Couple.
- Fans portray Claire as a Shipper on Deck when really she's a violent Yandere determined to destroy Alice and Bob's relationship.
- Subverted:
- Those fanfic writers who actually like Claire decide to somehow put Alice on a bus and have Bob and Claire hit it off.
- Alternatively, when it's suddenly revealed that Bob and Alice are literally brother and sister, fanfic writers stop writing the two together.
- In a fanfic, Claire is in a relationship with Dennis.
- Double Subverted
- A fanfic writer who does this hates Alice. And sure enough, there's a Bus Crash...
- But only some. Others ignore canon, creatively reinterpret existing canon ("It was a metaphor!"), or even have a fetish for that sort of thing.
- Who goes crazy and kills her.
- Parodied:
- Alice and Claire both decide they can do much better than Bob, so they go and find themselves new boyfriends.
- Alternatively, Bob decides he can do better than Alice or Claire, so he goes to find himself a new girlfriend.
- Or, each girl attempts to repeatedly kill each other. Bonus points if they're doing this with a ship motif in there. When each character is about to bite the big one, Bob comes in and saves her. Make sure you hint that this happens repeatedly and daily...or hourly
- Deconstructed:
- After Claire dies, Bob gets with Alice in an attempt to move on from her. It's a bit of a rash move though. He's still grieving for Claire, and the relationship suffers and ends quickly because of this.
- The writer decides to go with a Die for Our Ship, but twists it, causing the plot to get derailed due to screwing with several characters' personalities. This results in the entire fan-base going against the original shippers for causing a Romantic Plot Tumor.
- Reconstructed: Alice, after being left, goes batshit insane and tries to kill Bob, but Deena saves him. Deena then helps him to recover from everything that's happened, and eventually he decides to give love another chance. With her.
- Zig Zagged: In canon, Alice and Bob are together and Claire and Dennis are together. In fanon, they're all together.
- Averted:
- A fanfic writer simply pairs up Bob and Alice, without killing or derailing Claire.
- A fanfic writer abandons shipping after a Ship Sinking event.
- Also, Claire decides she's more interested in Earl anyway, leaving Alice and Bob together.
- Enforced: Bob tells Claire in no uncertain terms that he loves Alice.
- Lampshaded: "Ain't it strange that there is always a characters hated by the fans because they're a threat to the characters they ship?"
- Invoked: "That whore! She's trying to take Bob away from Claire! I'll write a fanfic about this and she will PAY!"
- Defied:
- "You know what? If Bob prefers Claire over Alice, that's fine with me."
- Bob dies, or Alice and Claire both die, or just one of them dies but both ships sink with them.
- Discussed: "What makes Alice better than Claire, I 'd like to know?"
- Conversed: "You know, instead of killing off Claire like most fanfic writers do, you could always have her just want Bob to be happy."
- Plotted A Good Waste: Creators don't like one of their characters anymore so they intentionally pair her up so that she'll be hated by the fans. Then she can be killed off easily without much protest by fans.
