Detective Conan/Characters/Other Recurring Characters
Makoto Kyougoku
Makoto Kyougoku
Voiced by Nobuyuki Hiyama (JP)
Sonoko's long-distance boyfriend, a famous karate champion. He's from Izu, actually, and his family owns a ryokan there.
Mandatory Naming Note: The last two kanji of his name (-goku Makoto) is Alternate Character Reading of Kyokushin, a major school of karate (This has been Lampshaded in-universe).
- Adorkable
- Ambiguously Brown
- Big Damn Heroes: Not bad at these.
- Rescue Romance: He started gaining Sonoko's favor when he rescued her from a Serial Killer in the same case he was introduced.
- Genius Bruiser and Gentle Giant
- Long-Distance Relationship
- Love At First Sight: Makoto actually saw Sonoko for the first time when she was cheering for Ran in a karate tournament, and since then he had a crush on her.
- Made of Iron: Seems to have an uncanny resistence to pain. Come on, he gets a knife stuck in his left arm and just says he's okay!
- Oblivious to Love: Since he's horribly Not Good with People, so he seems to have a hard time picking up on her "subtle" hints--in the Valentine's Day episode where she went to a resort with Kogoro's family to make a chocolate heart for (she told Makoto) "the person she cared for most," Makoto showed up to see who this person was and if he was a suitable companion for her. This turned out to be a good thing, as he arrived just in time to help KO two murderers who got the drop on everyone else. When he asked who it was and Sonoko pointed at him, he turned around to look behind him.
- Pointless Band-Aid: Near his left eye
- Red Baron: "The Prince of Attack", according to Ran.
- Skilled but Naive: Very talented karate expert. Very naive in any social interactions.
- Tall, Dark and Handsome
Sumiko Kobayashi
Sumiko Kobayashi
Conan and the Detective Boys' class teacher.
- Cool Teacher: After her first episode.
- Fan Girl: Of Ranpo Edogawa
- Hot Teacher: More of a cute one, though.
- Identical Stranger: Without her glasses, Kobayashi looks a LOT like Detective Satou. Which troubles her when Shiratori shows interest in her, as she believes at first he only likes her because of her physical similarity to her. (Not to mention, the reason why Shiratori mistook Sato as the girl he liked was because of her looks.
- Meganekko
- Pet the Dog: Even when she was making herself pass as a Sadist Teacher, Kobayashi couldn't fully hide her kind nature, thus she watered the plants and fed the pet fishes in secret.
- Rescue Romance and Victorious Childhood Friend: With Shiratori, since she was the girl he rescued a long time ago.
- Sadist Teacher: Her Jerkass Facade. For the reason, see...
- Shrinking Violet: After some really bad experiences in her former workplace, Kobayashi was so terrified of doing badly in parent meetings that she used to practice in the empty school at night with dolls. The Detective Kids thought she was a witch, though. (And Conan thought she was planning to kill someone else!).
Subaru Okiya
Subaru Okiya
Voiced by Ryotaro Okiayu (JP)
A grad-school student that currently lives in the (now vacant) Kudo mansion and takes care of it after his apartment burns down.
- Beware the Nice Ones: Currently being toyed with. While he looks and acts like a friendly Sherlock Holmes-loving grad student and a Big Brother Mentor living in Conan/Shinichi's house, yet he also sometimes gives Ai the chills, which only happens around Black Organization members and Shuuichi Akai.
Conan, explaining why he let the fox-faced Subaru stay at his house: "A person who loves Sherlock Holmes couldn't possibly be evil!"
- He also seems to have figured out that Conan is Shinichi thanks to eavesdropping.
- Big Brother Mentor
- Big Fancy House: Subverted, he's only the caretaker of the Kudo mansion.
- Fanboy: Of Sherlock Holmes.
- Eyes Always Shut
- Megane
- The Stoic: Never loses his cool.
- Supreme Chef
- The Un-Reveal: Recent chapters have hinted that there's something suspicious about his neck, which he always has covered. While he's sensitive about it, it looks perfectly normal.
Yoko Okino
Yoko Okino
Voiced by Yuri Amano / Miki Nagasawa (JP)
One of the earliest recurring characters on record, she is Kogoro's favourite Idol Singer. Often guides the Mouris in situations involving the entertainment industry.
- Idol Singer
- Plucky Girl: The day after her ex-boyfriend was Spurned Into Suicide and framed her as he died, Yoko returned to work. Ran comments on her strength of mind and heart.
- Spoiled Sweet
Eisuke Hondou
Eisuke Hondou
Voiced by Junko Noda (JP)
One of Sonoko and Ran's classmates, who has a somewhat weak health and is very clumsy.
Mandatory naming note: "Hondou" comes from Bondo (ボンド), the Japanese pronounciation of (James) Bond, Eisuke from mystery writer Eisuke Kaito.
- Butt Monkey
- Cute Clumsy Girl: A Rare Male Example
- Obfuscating Stupidity: Though he is clumsy by nature, more than one of his blunders weren't that casual.
- Dude Looks Like a Lady: And how-- go back above and check Kobayashi-sensei's picture, and he looks 80% like her.
- Ill Boy: He had leukemia when he was a child, and he got better due to his older sister Hidemi's bone marrow donation. This is a plot point as his blood type changed because of it: he used to be a O, but now he and Hidemi/Rena are AB.
- All story arcs related to him happened in hospitals. Even when he's not the one admitted.
- Kansai Regional Accent: He was born and raised in Osaka
- Love Triangle: Invoked and subverted. In front of Conan, Eisuke claims to have fallen in love with Ran and that he wants to take her to America with him. When Conan/Shinichi reacts strongly, he takes it as the hint he needed to guess his secret identity, and then both promises to be one of his Secret Keepers and asks him to protect her in his stead.
- Meganekko: Rare Male Example, due to his very high Moe quotient.
- New Transfer Student
- Nice Guy
- Secret Keeper: One of the few people who actually guessed Conan's secret identity correctly, and by himself. This probably put his intelligence on par with Heiji!
- Strong Family Resemblance: With his older sister, Hidemi Hondou aka Rena Mizunashi aka Kir. Unknowingly lampshaded by Ran, who notices it.
Fusae Campbell Kinoshita
Fusae Campbell Kinoshita
Famous fashion designer using gingko leaves as her personal motif.
- But Not Too Foreign: One can guess from the name. Although her introduction arc also discussed a Real Life issue: she tends to hide her blond hair as the very xenophobic Japanese would have quite a bit of prejudice against people of mixed blood like her. And specially when her story was supposedly set 40 years ago, few after World War Two.
- Star-Crossed Lovers: With Agasa.
Reiko Kujou
Reiko Kujou
Voiced by Rica Matsumoto (JP)
A beautiful and strongwilled attorney who serves as Eri's rival.
- Canon Foreigner: Only appears in the anime.
- Hello, Attorney!
- The Rival: To Eri
- Tall, Dark and Bishoujo
Ayako Suzuki
Ayako Suzuki / Angie Sebastian
Sonoko's elder sister.
- Cool Big Sis
- Eyes Always Shut
- Official Couple: With Yuzo.
- The Ojou: More of a Type 1 than Sonoko.
Yuzo Tomizawa
Yuzo Tomizawa/ Tod Appenheimer
Voiced by Yasunori Matsumoto (JP)
Sonoko's future brother-in-law, a young painter and son of another rich family.
- Adorkable: For some.
- Official Couple: With Ayako
- Same Sex Triplets: The youngest of them.
- Self-Made Orphan: Averted. He was one of the three suspects alongside his triplet siblings Taichi and Tatsuji, but he wasn't the culprit. It was the eldest, Taichi.
- The White Prince
Midori Megure
Midori Megure
Voiced by Ai Orikasa (JP)
Inspector Megure's wife.
- Alliterative Name
- Good Scars, Evil Scars: Has a scar on her forehead, coming from the incident in which both she and Megure were almost killed.
- Joshikousei: When in highschool, and actually a very important point in the case she was involved in, as the length of her school skirt (often used by girl delinquents) drew a Serial Killer to her.
- Dangerously Genre Savvy: She wore these long skirts deliberately to draw the Serial Killer towards herself, since she acted as a decoy to get justice for said killer's murder of her best friend. Lampshaded when she lays injured in Megure's arms in his flashback, and she tells him "it didn't work like in the movies."
- May-December Romance: Is quite younger than Megure.
- Silk Hiding Steel: Her introductory episode shows a skill for subtlty.
Masumi Sera
Masumi Sera
Voiced by Noriko Hidaka (JP)
A rather peculiar New Transfer Student who appeared recently in the manga and now has showed up in the anime.
- Action Girl: Jeet Kune Do practitioner
- A-Cup Angst: "They're due to pop out every day now!", and mentioning that her mother seems to have quite large breasts so hers will become this too
- Amateur Sleuth
- Bifauxnen
- Bi the Way: Maybe, she did tease Ran and Sonoko by saying Ran's just her type.
- The Mole?: Sera's done more suspicious things in two stories then Subaru's done in two years: She's unusually interested in finding a connection between Conan and Shinichi, she made an enhanced photo of Ai from a tiny reflection in a You Tube video that was used in a kidnapping attempt (they got Ayumi instead) and took particular glee in deleting it, and she recently caught the eye of Conan's FBI friends.
- Nice Hats
- Panty Shot: While bringing down someone.
- Running Gag: About the above, people being unsure if she's a girl or a boy.
- Samus Is a Girl: On Ran, Conan and Sonoko
- She's Got Legs: see Panty Shot
- Tomboy
Dr. Tomoaki Araide
Dr. Tomoaki Araide
Voiced by Hideyuki Hori (JP)
The handsome son of Kogoro's doctor, with the bad luck of being introduced in the case where his dad was murdered. After that, he's been seen around more than once, acting nice to almost everyone and being a possible Romantic Runner-Up.
- Gambit Pileup: In the middle of two of these. See the main page for more details.
- Hideyuki Hori: Despite not being a ninja.
- Hospital Hottie
- Kindhearted Cat Lover
- Megane
- Nice Guy: Even veering into a male Ingenue of sorts, since he's way too gullible sometimes.
- Romantic False Lead: Was presented as one, thought he's much nicer than the standard. And Ran was more interested in his sweater.
- Romantic Runner-Up: Sorry, dude. You're nice and all, we all know it... but you're just not Shinichi. He doesn't win even in the Stranger from Ten Years Later OAV, no matter if it's canon or not.
- Sympathy for the Devil: When he returns to his normal life after Vermouth tried to kill him and took over his identity for a while, most people don't notice a difference and comment on what a good person he is. This causes him to wonder whether his impostor is really evil.
- The Average-looking Doctor's Hot Son: His dad wasn't a Gonk, but it's clear that the younger Araide didn't inherit his looks.
- Yamato Nadeshiko: Male example. Yeah, he's THAT sweet.
Hikaru Yasumoto
Hikaru Yasumoto
Voiced by Akiko Hiramatsu (JP)
Dr. Araide's housekeeper.
- Dojikko: Not Played for Laughs, as Dr. Araide treats her harshly due to her blunders.
- Ill Girl: She met the Araide family when she was hospitalized, then started working for them.
- Shrinking Violet
- Unwitting Pawn: And Conan, Inspector Megure, and Dr. Araide's wife/killer make sure it stays that way. Would you want to know that you accidentally killed someone by flipping on the lights at the worst moment? Poor Hikaru.
- Yamato Nadeshiko
Midori Kuriyama
Midori Kuriyama
Voiced by Asako Dodo (JP)
Eri's secretary.
Tooru Amuro
Tooru Amuro
Private Detective who first appeared posing as a waiter while helping a client with a case. He currently works at Café Poirot, and has become Kogoro's apprentice.
- Bishonen
- Dark-Skinned Blond
- Homage: to Amuro. complete with white RX-7 which is Shout-Out to RX-78-2
- Sherlock Scan: Here
- The Mole: Heavily hinted to be Bourbon
