Raghav Lakhanpal

Raghav Lakhanpal Sharma is an Indian Politician from Saharanpur, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. After completing his schooling at the Doon School, Dehradun, he went on to complete a bachelor of Commerce (Honours) degree from the University of Delhi. Thereafter, he pursued a Master’s in business administration (M.B.A.) from the International Management Institute, New Delhi, which he completed in the year 1999.

Raghav Lakhanpal entered the field of politics at the relatively early age of 26, after the tragic assassination of his late Father Sh, Nirbhay Pal Sharma, who was an immensely popular leader from the B.J.P. and a three term MLA from Sarsawa Constituency. Raghav Lakhanpal contested and won his first election in the year 2001. He has won three elections to the legislative assembly of the state of Uttar Pradesh representing the Bhartiya Janta Party (B.J.P), since. He contested and won his first election in 2001 when he became the youngest member of legislative assembly in the entire country. In the year 2007, he was elected to the legislative assembly from ‘Saharanpur’ constituency by a handsome margin and then re-elected for a third term in February, 2012, again by a handsome margin

In May 2014, he was elected Member of Parliament from Saharanpur Lok Sabha constituency, thereby winning his fourth election. Between the years 2014 to 2019 he was a member of the standing committees on Defence and External Affairs and a member of the Consultative committee on Urban Development. He was also a member of the “Indian Council of World Affairs”. He also introduced a Private members bill on a new "Population Policy" in Parliament  in 2018, seeking India must advocate a stringent population policy to overcome the rising population growth and disallow subsidies to those who produce more than two children

He has been actively involved in further strengthening the party he represents and has worked at various organizational levels of the B.J.P. within the state of Uttar Pradesh as also at the national level. Raghav Lakhanpal has been a member of the national executive of the B.J.P. and was also the National Vice-President of the youth wing of the party, known as the Bharatiya Janta Yuva Morcha (B.J.Y.M.). He has a keen interest in youth affairs and has organized as well as participated in various rallies, demonstrations and movements of regional and national importance.

In the year 2011, Raghav Lakhanpal  travelled to the U.S.A. at the invitation of the International Republican Institute as part of a Parliamentary Delegation with an aim to strengthening Democratic ties between the two countries. Again, in the year 2013, he was invited to U.S.A. as a guest of the U.S. State Department to learn about various forms of government in the U.S.A. In Nov. 2014, he was invited to King’s College London, to undergo a course in leadership. In April 2015, Princeton University U.S.A. also invited him for a round of interactions with faculty and students of the University, as also with several significant think-tanks. In May 2015, Raghav Lakhanpal was nominated by the honourable speaker of the Lok Sabha to represent India as an international observer for the U.K Parliamentary elections. In June 2015, he was invited by the German Parliament to Berlin and Hamburg in order to understand the German system of Dual Vocational training. In all of these visits, he has been able to effectively synergise the strengths prevalent in all these countries, so as to reap benefits for India, and at the same time, to give an eye-opener about the positives about our own country and the limitless opportunities available in India, for these countries. In September 2017, he represented India as Head of Delegation in the Asian Parliamentary Assembly in Cambodia. Raghav Lakhanpal also represented the Govt of India Delegation at the “UN General Assembly” session in New York, in October 2017

Raghav Lakhanpal spends a major part of his time in his constituency and continues to serve and nurture it to the best of his ability. He meets his constituents daily and successfully strives to solve their problems, be it the need for better roads and sanitation or other issues that require to be redressed with the local and state administration. His continuous efforts have been rewarded in the form of “Sanction of the Doubling of the Saharanpur- Meerut Railway Line” as well as the doubling of the “Delhi- Shamli-Saharanpur” railway lines. The new entry to the Saharanpur Railway station as well as amenities such as Elevators and escalators were the results of his sustained efforts. He has also been instrumental  in Sanctioning of a State University for Saharanpur  as well as the inclusion of “Saharanpur “in the list of “Smart Cities”. On his request and initiation various other development projects, such as the National Highway NH-709B between Delhi and Saharanpur, as well as sanction of funds to upgrade urban infrastructure in Saharanpur under the Smart City Project have been approved. He is immensely popular with his constituents and strongly voices their needs and expectations at various levels within the State as well as the centre
