Development

While developing their new streaming service, Disney+, Disney approached Phineas and Ferb creators Dan Povenmire and Jeff "Swampy" Marsh and asked them to develop a new Phineas and Ferb movie for the service,[8] as they wanted the service to have "projects that would appeal both to kids and adults, and [the] show has a multi-generational appeal", with 47% of their audience being adults.[9] While initially unsure about making a movie, as "[they] thought [they] had done enough with these characters", the two eventually agreed to develop the film upon "[realizing they] kind of missed them", to which they "started thinking about a fun premise that would appeal to everyone, even those who weren't familiar with the show".[9] During the first week of writing, the writers came up with several different ideas for the movie, but they were all discarded, as they had already been done in the series.[9] They eventually came up with the idea of "a real rescue story" in which Candace is captured by aliens, and settled on that, as the series never had a rescue story, a story in which Candace was the main character, or a story that put the characters in "dire stakes".[8][10][9] Povenmire and Marsh said that "[they] wanted to make sure [they] had something new to say [about the characters]" while working on the film, but that didn't "violate any of the characters' set-ups and rules of their world".[9]

On April 11, 2019, it was announced that a new film titled The Phineas and Ferb Movie would be released on Disney+ within a year of its launch.[11][12][13][14] The film will be produced by Disney Television Animation, marking their first non-television film since Teacher's Pet (2004), while Marsh and Swamp will serve as executive producers.[2][4] The film will also mark Disney's first non-television film to use 2D animation since Winnie the Pooh (2011).[15] According to Jim Bernstein, the film is unrelated to a theatrical Phineas and Ferb film that was previously in the works.[16][17] The film's title was announced as Phineas and Ferb the Movie: Candace Against the Universe on August 23, 2019, during the 2019 D23 Expo.[18] On March 27, 2020, Disney Television Animation was temporarily closed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, but production on the film continued remotely.[19] On July 1, 2020, it was confirmed that Bob Bowen will direct the film.[20] The film officially wrapped production on July 11, 2020.[21]

According to Marsh, Bowen managed to find a "creative solution" to a story issue within the film, which they initially opposed, but eventually agreed to use in the film after Bowen pitched it to them again as an animatic.[10][22]

Casting and recording

During the film's announcement, it was reported that Vincent Martella, Ashley Tisdale, Dee Bradley Baker, Povenmire, Caroline Rhea, Marsh, and Alyson Stoner are set to reprise their roles from the series, while David Errigo Jr. will reprise his role as Ferb from Milo Murphy's Law, replacing original voice actor Thomas Brodie-Sangster.[12] In May 2020, Povenmire revealed that Bowen will make a cameo as Trucker Ted, reprising his role from Milo Murphy's Law.[6] On July 2, 2020, it was reported that Ali Wong, Wayne Brady, Diedrich Bader, and Thomas Middleditch joined the cast in roles created for the film.[7] "Weird Al" Yankovic was originally set to reprise his role as Milo Murphy from Milo Murphy's Law, but his cameo was ultimately cut from the final film.[6] However, Yankovic will still appear in the film as a different character.[23]

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many cast members had to record their lines from their homes.[24][25][26] On June 14, 2020, Martella revealed that he had finished recording his lines.[27] After recording their lines, voice actors sent their dialogue to the film's editors.[28]

Animation

Due to Disney Television Animation closing in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Povenmire did additional animation fixing personally from his home.[29] On May 28, 2020, Povenmire and Marsh said that the film's production wasn't hindered by the temporary closure, since animators "always spend a lot of time drawing at home. So most of them have a pretty full setup and most of them already have the technology to be able to link up".[8]

Music

During the 2019 D23 Expo, Marsh and Povenmire revealed that the film will feature "nine or ten" original songs.[30] In November 2019, Povenmire revealed that recording for the songs had already begun.[31] On May 28, 2020, Povenmire and Marsh revealed that Karey Kirkpatrick and Kate Micucci wrote new songs for the film.[8] On July 2, 2020, it was annonced that Emanuel Kiriakou and Povenmire co-wrote a new song for the film, while Phineas and Ferb composer Danny Jacob was confirmed to be composing the film's score.[7][32] Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Povenmire and Marsh had to record part of the music for the film remotely.[28]

On July 24, 2020, the first single from the soundtrack, "Such a Beautiful Day", written by Povenmire and Kirkpatrick and sung by Candace, was released.[33] The song was added late in production, as the filmmakers felt that the original opening, in which Candace tried to bust Phineas and Ferb, was "too harsh" for audiences unfamiliar with the original series and made audiences unable to sympathize with the character.[10]

On August 14, 2020, the second single from the soundtrack, "We're Back", written by Povenmire and Marsh and sung by Phineas, Candace, and Doofenshmirtz, was released.

The soundtrack album will be released by Walt Disney Records the same day as the film.[7] It will feature 11 original songs, as well as the song "Chop Away at My Heart" from Milo Murphy's Law.[34][35]
