List of first African-American U.S. state legislators

African Americans have served in state legislatures, with several interruptions, since Alexander Twilight was elected to the Vermont lower house in 1836. Two states (out of 50) have yet to elect or appoint African-American state legislators, North Dakota and South Dakota.
