Hungary in the Eurovision Song Contest 2012

Hungary participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 in Baku, Azerbaijan. The Hungarian entry was selected through A Dal (which means "The Song"), consisting of two semi-finals and a final, organised by the Hungarian broadcaster M1. Compact Disco represented Hungary with the song "Sound of Our Hearts", which qualified from the first semi-final and went on to place 24th in the final, scoring 19 points.[1][2]

Before Eurovision

A Dal 2012

A Dal 2012 was the first edition of the Hungarian national selection that selected Hungary's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2012. All shows were broadcast live on m1 and Duna TV World, and were hosted by Zsóka Kapócs and Gábor Gundel-Takács.

Competing entries

On 1 December 2011, MTVA opened the submission period for artists and composers to submit their entries up until 30 December 2011.[3] Artists were permitted to collaborate with international composers.[4] After the submission deadline had passed, a preselection jury selected thirty entries for the competition. The competing artists and songs were announced on 10 January 2012.[5]

Semi-final 1

The first semi-final took place on 28 January 2012 where ten entries competed. Four entries qualified to the semi-finals after two rounds of voting.[6] The jury panel rated each song from 1-10 with the top three highest scoring songs qualifying as the jury's choice: Compact Disco, Gábor Heincz and Caramel were the jury qualifiers, which left the remaining seven songs facing a public televote. Gabi Tóth was the televoting qualifier.

Juli Fábián & Zoohacker was the televoting qualifier.

Final

The final of took place on 11 February 2012. Four songs from each semifinal, eight songs in total, qualified to compete. In the first round, a public SMS vote selected the top four songs which proceeded to the second round of voting. The Kiralys, Compact Disco, Caramel and Gábor Heincz advanced to the second round after their songs achieved the highest scores from the SMS vote. The jury exclusively decided the result in the second round. A different voting system for the jury was used, with each jury voting for their favourite song among the top four. Compact Disco and the song "Sound of Our Hearts" was the winner after achieving the highest score from the jury.

At Eurovision

Hungary competed in the second half of the first semi-final on 22 May and qualified to the Grand Final, where it finished in 24th place with a total of 19 points. .[7]

Split results

  • In the Semi-final 1 Hungary came 10th with 52 points: the public awarded Hungary 11th place with 39 points and the jury awarded 7th place with 76 points.
  • In the Final Hungary came 24th with 19 points: the public awarded Hungary 22nd place with 20 points and the jury awarded 23rd place with 30 points.
