Background

S-X recorded the chorus and produced the instrumental in his home studio in Wolverhampton, England. He sent the chorus and instrumental to KSI, who recorded several verses for the song with the intention of it being his ring walk song for KSI vs. Logan Paul II. KSI's music manager, Mams Taylor of Premier League Music, suggested having some American rappers feature on the song since KSI vs. Logan Paul II would be taking place in the United States, resulting in the addition of Rick Ross and Lil Baby's verses.[2][3] KSI recalls that him and S-X were "going nuts" when they received Rick Ross and Lil Baby's verses.[4] Speaking on his involvement in the song, Rick Ross said, "it's really exciting to get to work with KSI. The homie's a young hustler. This younger generation really tuned into him. So I'm happy to be a part of it".[5] Speaking about the track being his ring walk song for KSI vs. Logan Paul II, KSI explained, "I wanted to make a statement and get inside Logan’s head ‒ make him realise that I’m on a completely different level".[6]

Promotion and release

At the UK press conference for KSI vs. Logan Paul II, on 7 October 2019, KSI exclusively revealed during an interview with Footasylum that he would be releasing a new single called "Down Like That" which will be his ring walk song for the boxing match and will have "some big features" that "no one is even going to suspect".[7] "Down Like That" was released worldwide for digital download and streaming via all platforms on 8 November 2019 through American independent record label RBC Records, under BMG Rights Management; the song was KSI's first release through the record label after recently signing with them in October 2019.[8] The day after its release, on 9 November 2019, "Down Like That" was performed live by Rick Ross, Lil Baby and S-X during KSI's ring walk entrance for KSI vs. Logan Paul II at the Staples Center, Los Angeles.[9][10]

KSI explained the song's lyrics and meaning as part of a Genius Verified video interview, which was released on 12 December 2019.[11]

Critical reception

Richard Smirke of Billboard described "Down Like That" as "a catchy, hard-hitting hip-hop track".[6] Mitch Findlay of HotNewHipHop said, "the end result is a decent, if not entirely spectacular dose of melodic rap, tinged ever-so-slightly with dubstep elements". He continued, "for what it's worth, KSI sounds comfortable on the instrumental". He highlighted that Rick Ross' verse is "brief and admittedly phoned-in", but noted that his "presence and gravitas are statements in themselves". He continued, "Lil Baby fares no better, capable though not exerting himself in the slightest".[12] Sam Rasmin of Link Up TV said, "it is safe to say that they have delivered with this one. Rick Ross and Lil Baby set the level with some fire raps while S-X delivers an infectious hook. There is no doubt that this one will be doing numbers".[13]

Commercial performance

"Down Like That" entered the UK Singles Chart at number 18 and dropped to number 22 the following week.[14][15] The next week, the song climbed to its peak of number 10, making it KSI's second UK top 40 single, and his first to reach the top ten.[16][15] During this week, it topped the UK's iTunes downloads chart.[17] The song dropped to number 17 and then number 37 over the following two weeks, before dropping out of the top 40 and spending a further six weeks in the top 100.[15] "Down Like That" is currently KSI's second-highest-charting single in the UK to date.[15] The song spent a total of ten weeks on the UK Hip Hop and R&B Singles Chart, peaking at number 3.[18] "Down Like That" also charted at number 77 on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100.[19] KSI reacted to the commercial success of "Down Like That" at the time on Twitter, saying that it "shows how powerful the YouTube community is" and "it's just all about letting the world/mainstream know".[20][17] On 21 February 2020, "Down Like That" received a Silver certification from the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) for exceeding UK sales of 200,000 units.[21]

Music videos

An audio visualiser video for the song was uploaded to KSI's YouTube channel on 7 November 2019. It has 23 million views.[22]

The song's music video was filmed in Los Angeles on 11 November 2019, two days after KSI beat Logan Paul in their boxing rematch, and premiered on KSI's YouTube channel on 22 November 2019, two weeks after the release of the song. It has 16 million views.[23] The video is directed by American director Nayip Ramos and stars all four artists.[24] The video opens with a brief message that reads, "on November 9th KSI beat Logan Paul in what was dubbed the biggest event in internet history. Two days later on November 11th he was on set filming his music video. Here is the result".[24] The video's opening scene sees "KSI falling from a dark-thunderous sky before he crashes through a ceiling and lands on rubbled concrete".[24] The rest of the video's "cinematic imagery" features "motorcycles, burned out cars and trash can fires", and has a "dystopian", "post-apocalyptic" and "dusty grunge aesthetic".[5][25] A behind-the-scenes video of the filming of the music video was uploaded to KSI's YouTube channel on 26 November 2019.[26]

An alternative music video titled "Down Like That (KSI vs Logan Paul 2 Edition)", which uses a compilation of video footage from KSI vs. Logan Paul II to accompany the audio track, was uploaded to KSI's YouTube channel on 4 December 2019. It has 7.5 million views.[27]
