S-X (producer)

Sam Andrew Gumbley, better known by his stage name S-X, is a British record producer, singer and songwriter from Wolverhampton, England. Gumbley was credited for drum programming on Childish Gambino's Grammy nominated album Because the Internet. He gained mainstream popularity when he featured on KSI's song "Down Like That," alongside Rick Ross and Lil Baby. The song which reached number 10 on the UK singles chart was part of KSI's debut album, "Dissimulation". Gumbley has produced for Lil Wayne, T.I., Iggy Azalea, Jeezy, Skepta, Tinie Tempah and Lupe Fiasco.[1][2]

Early life

Gumbley was born on 4 August 1992 in Wolverhampton, England. When he was in Year 7, Gumbley began playing the drums and producing music in FL Studio.[3] He attended Smestow School in Wolverhampton, before moving on to study music production at the City of Wolverhampton College, he attended the same class as Liam Payne.[3]

Career

Aged 15, Gumbley produced the instrumental "Woo Riddim", which two years later became a famous grime instrumentals, being used by British MC D Double E for the 2010 song "Bad 2 Tha Bone".[4]

In 2017, Gumbley began to use his vocals over his own beats, establishing himself as a singer-songwriter as well as just a producer.[3]

On 4 July 2019, Gumbley released a song titled "Always Wrong" as the lead single from his album True Colours.[5][6][7] The album's second single titled "Too Soon" was released on 12 September 2019.[8] True Colours was independently released soon after on 26 September 2019.[9] "Come Alive" was released as the third single from the album on 26 December 2019.[10]

He was the support act for singer Lily Allen on her No Shame Tour on the North American and European leg of her tour.

Gumbley produced and featured on British YouTuber and rapper KSI's single "Down Like That", also featuring American rappers Rick Ross and Lil Baby, which was released on 7 November 2019.[11] The song peaked at number 10 on the UK Singles Chart,[12] making it Gumbley's first and only top-ten single in the UK, and reached number 1 on the Apple ITunes UK Singles Downloads Chart.[13] In February 2020, the BPI certified the song as Silver.[14]

Gumbley produced and featured on the song "The Gift" by British YouTube group Sidemen, which was released as part of their Sidemen Sunday YouTube video "Sidemen Make a Song in 24 Hours" on 15 December 2019.[15] The song reached number 77 on the UK Singles Chart[16] and number 18 on the UK Singles Downloads Chart,[17] and peaked at number 6 on the Apple iTunes UK Singles Downloads Chart.[18]

On 10 January 2020, Gumbley released a single titled "Neither Would I".[19][20][21] The song reach number 42 on the UK Independent Singles Chart,[22] and debuted at number 11 on the Apple iTunes UK Singles Downloads Chart.[23]

Gumbley also wrote the chorus of and produced KSI's single "Wake Up Call", featuring American rapper and singer Trippie Redd, which was released on 31 January 2020. The song reached number 11 on the UK Singles Chart, making it Gumbley's second UK top 40 appearance, and number 2 on the Apple iTunes UK Singles Downloads Chart.[24]

In 2020, Gumbley appeared alongside KSI as a cast member in series 2 of Celebrity Gogglebox.[25]
