Bulgaria in the Eurovision Song Contest 2005

Bulgaria was represented at Eurovision 2005 by the group Kaffe and the song "Lorraine", written by Vesselin Vesselinov-Eko and Orlin Pavlov and composed by Vesselin Vesselinov-Eko.

Before Eurovision

EuroBGVision 2005

EuroBGVision 2005 was the national final format developed by BNT in order to select Bulgaria's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2005. The competition consisted of a semi-final and a final on 22 January and 12 February 2005 respectively. The semi-final took place at the BNT studios in Sofia and the final took place at the National Palace of Culture in Sofia. Both shows were hosted by Aleksandra Surchadzhieva and Deyan Slavchev.[1]

Format

The competition consisted of a semi-final on 22 January 2005 and a final on 12 February 2005. Twenty-four songs competed in the semi-final and the top twelve qualified by the votes of an expert jury. Twelve songs consisting of the twelve semi-final qualifiers competed in the final, where public televoting determined the winner.

Competing entries

BNT received 93 entries, and an expert committee selected twenty-four songs for the competition. The list of competing artists and songs were released on 18 January 2005.[2]

Semi-final

The semi-final took place on 22 January 2005. Twenty-four songs competed and the top twelve entries as determined by an expert jury advanced to the final.[3]

Final

The final took place on 12 February 2005. Twelve songs consisting of the twelve semi-final winners competed and the winner was determined by public televoting. Slavi Trifonov & Sofi Marinova refused to perform as they believed that the final was fixed in favour of Kaffe. At the conclusion of the voting, "Lorraine" performed by Kaffe was indeed the winner. Only the results of the top two were known, while the other results presented below were those that were on screen 10 minutes before the voting ended.[4]

At Eurovision

Bulgaria made their debut, so the country was forced to compete in the semi-final. Bulgaria performed 21st, following Croatia and preceding Ireland. They came 19th with 49 points, failing to qualify to the Grand Final. Therefore, Bulgaria had to compete in the semi-final again in ESC 2006.

The spokesperson who revealed Bulgaria's votes for other countries was BNT employee Evgenia Atanasova.[5]
