Austria was represented by Manuel Ortega in the Eurovision Song Contest 2002 in Tallinn, Estonia with the song "Say A Word".

Before Eurovision

Song.Null.Zwei

Song.Null.Zwei was the national final that selected Austria's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2002. The competition took place on 1 March 2002 at the ORF studios in Vienna, hosted by Andi Knoll.

Format

Ten songs competed in the competition where the winner was selected by public voting. Viewers were able to vote via telephone or SMS and the results for each voting method created an overall ranking from which points from 1 to 5 were distributed to the top five entries. A third set of votes were the results of an internet jury consisting of 2002 people previously selected via an online quiz. The overall ranking of the entries was also assigned scores from 1 to 5.[1]

Competing entries

ORF invited all interested artists to submit their entries to the broadcaster until late September 2001.[2] At the close of the deadline, the broadcaster received over 700 submissions. ORF selected four entries from the submissions to compete in the national final. The remaining six artists were established Austrian acts signed to record labels.[3] The ten artists selected to compete in the national final were revealed on 28 January 2002.[4]

Final

The final took place on 1 March 2002. Ten songs competed and a combination of points from televoting, SMS voting and an internet jury selected "Say a Word" performed by Manuel Ortega as the winner.[5]

At Eurovision

On the night of the contest, Ortega sang 3rd, following the United Kingdom and preceding Greece. At the close of the voting, his song had received 26 points, placing 18th in a field of 24.
