Current status

The Yiddish Wikipedia now has 14,793 articles. There are 38,290 registered users (including bots); 69 are active, including 3 administrators.

Like all Wikipedias it generates hits from Yiddish words typed in Google, with Wikipedia articles appearing at the top of the results for that word.

In accordance with the norms for the Yiddish language, it is written almost exclusively in Hebrew script, and not in Latin script.

Milestones

The Yiddish Wikipedia reached 6,000 articles on March 8, 2009. The 6,000th article is יהושע העשיל תאומים-פרענקל, a rabbi. The 7,000th article is חנינא סגן הכהנים, a page about the tanna Hanina Segan ha-Kohanim created on December 24, 2009.

Point of view

Combined, the different Hasidic groups form the largest Yiddish-speaking community in the world today. Many new articles are about Hasidic rabbis.[2]

gollark: You can even conveniently do `x = assert(thing)`, because the return value of `assert` there is `thing`.
gollark: Maybe I could make a useful utility library out of the random code I copy between projects a lot, like `map`, `fread`, `fwrite`, `fetch` and all that.
gollark: Also an approximate cross-server TPS measuring thing, although that's something like 5 lines of code and really does not need a library much (unless I add rolling averages and stuff).
gollark: I also have a ridiculously gigantic DEFLATE thing tweaked slightly from jackmacwindows's port of some WoW developer's thing.
gollark: Would adding the LZW library potatOS uses be useful? It's basically a minimal compression thing.
