Scottish Gaelic Wikipedia

The Scottish Gaelic Wikipedia (Scottish Gaelic: Uicipeid, [ˈuçkʲɪpetʲ]) is the Scottish Gaelic language version of Wikipedia. As of 7 December 2018, it contains 14,800 articles[1] and has 36 active editors.[2]

History

The encyclopedia was founded in 2004.[3][4] In 2017, Susan Ross was hired by the National Library of Scotland (NLS) to develop and promote the encyclopedia, a part time position that lasted 12 months. The NLS intended to augment its Gaelic resources following a digitization drive that put Gaelic-language materials on the Internet. Ross is a second-language speaker of Gaelic who learned the language as a teenager and completed a doctorate in Gaelic studies. She has been editing Uicipeid since 2010.[5][4][6] Working with community groups, she created help pages and worked to attract more editors.[3][6] The grant was sponsored by Wikimedia UK and Bòrd na Gàidhlig.[4]

At one point, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig offered a module teaching students how to edit Uicipeid.[7]

gollark: My DB-using projects include all migration capability too, if sometimes limited to a bunch of `CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS` calls, but if I ever *needed* it I would just make them able to call some functions to migrate the rows.
gollark: Well, yes, unless you write an extension for it, but no fixed length ones, and I can just do complex stuff in the program.
