Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS; English: Malaysian University of Sabah) is the ninth Malaysian public university located in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia, established on 24 November 1994.

History

Although UMS was established in 1994, UMS was only able to admit the first batch of 205 students in the following year. UMS was once situated at the site of the present University College of Sabah Foundation in Sembulan and, then, at the site of the present temporary Sabah Campus of Aminuddin Baki Institute in Manggatal. UMS only has a permanent campus at Likas Bay in 2000. Before the completion of the Kota Kinabalu Campus, Labuan Campus was earlier opened in 1999. In 2011, UMS got another campus dedicated for agriculture in Sandakan.[3]

Governance

As a public university, UMS has a Chancellor who presides the convocation ceremony. He is appointed by the King on the advice of the Minister of Education for a term of seven years. Governor Juhar Mahiruddin is currently the Chancellor.

The Chancellor is assisted by at least one Pro-Chancellor who presides the convocation ceremony in the Chancellor's absence. He is appointed by the Chancellor on his pleasure with the advice of the Minister of Education. By tradition, UMS has two Pro-Chancellors, one of them being the Chief Minister of Sabah.

As a federal statutory body, UMS operates under the supervision of a Board of Directors, a body that directs and supervises all affairs of the University. The Board comprises a Chairman and ten members who are all appointed by the Minister of Education for a three-year term.

The Board of Directors is assisted by a Senate, that provides for academic and student affairs of the University, and a Management Committee that oversees the day-to-day operations of the University. Both the Senate and the Management Committee is chaired by a Vice-Chancellor appointed by the Minister on the advice of the Board of Directors, usually for a three-year term.

Campus

UMS has three campuses: in Kota Kinabalu and Sandakan, Sabah and in the Federal Territory of Labuan.

Centres of studies

UMS has 10 faculties since 1 June 2014.[4] Most of them are situated in Kota Kinabalu.

  • Faculty of Business, Economics and Accountancy (FPEP) – Kota Kinabalu
  • Faculty of Computing and Informatics (FKI) – Kota Kinabalu and Labuan
  • Faculty of Engineering (FKJ) – Kota Kinabalu
  • Faculty of Food Science and Nutrition (FSMP) – Kota Kinabalu
  • Faculty of Humanities, Art and Heritage (FKSW) – Kota Kinabalu
  • Faculty of Medicine and Health Science (FPSK) – Kota Kinabalu
  • Faculty of Psychology and Education (FPP) – Kota Kinabalu
  • Faculty of Science and Natural Resources (FSSA) – Kota Kinabalu
  • Faculty of Sustainable Agriculture (FPL) – Sandakan
  • Labuan Faculty of International Finance (FKAL) – Labuan

There have been, however, other academic centres and institutes that are not equivalent to a Faculty but offered pre-university, undergraduate and postgraduate courses:

  • Institute of Biotechnological Research (IPB) – Kota Kinabalu

  • Institute of Tropical Biology and Conservation (IBTP) – Kota Kinabalu
  • Preparatory Centre for Science and Technology (PPST) – Kota Kinabalu
