His club is St Josephs GAA. He usually played at centre back for Laois and in 2003 won an All Stars Award[1] and was part of the Laois team that won the Leinster Senior Football Championship title for the first time since 1946.[2]

Kelly twice travelled to Australia for the International Rules Series,[3] where he was Ireland's player of the series in 2005.[4]

With St Josephs GAA, Kelly picked up two Laois Senior Football Championship medals.

In January 2011 Kelly was forced to retire due to a neck injury he sustained the year before.[5]
