History
Asianovelas have become hyped in the 2000s.[3] The huge demand from Filipino viewers has prompted Philippine TV stations to import Taiwanese dramas.[4] ABS-CBN starts importing TV series from Taiwan in May 2003, starting with its first drama series Meteor Garden. In 2004, the network introduced to Filipino viewers the South Korean dramas, as they premiered the Korean dramas The Truth and Four Sisters, which instantly become popular and leads the way in permanently importing more Korean dramas.[5]
In the past decade, ABS-CBN has aired a numerous score of Korean dramas including Lovers in Paris, Only You, Green Rose, My Girl, Princess Hours, Spring Waltz, Boys Over Flowers and He's Beautiful.
In 2015, ABS-CBN aired the Korean dramas Fated to Love You, Let's Get Married and My Lovely Girl, together with the Chinese drama Unforgettable Love in the same year. The block discontinued in June 2015.
In 2016, ABS-CBN only aired one Korean drama, My Love Donna, which premiered on March 14 and cancelled on April 8, being the first Korean drama to announce its "last two days" of airing. In the same year, ABS-CBN's digital free-to-air channel Cine Mo! aired the first Korean dramas on digital television starting with Blood, You're All Surrounded, Blade Man and Orange Marmalade.
In 2017, the Korean dramas had a successful return to ABS-CBN with Love in the Moonlight, Legend of the Blue Sea, Goblin, Weightlifting Fairy, and Hwarang, together with the Taiwanese drama My Dearest Intruder in the afternoon line up. In the same year, CineMo! aired more Korean dramas with Doctor Stranger, Hyde, Jekyll, Me, Sensory Couple, Signal and The K2.
In 2018, ABS-CBN boosts more permanent Korean programming with Black, The King is in Love, I am Not a Robot, W, Doctor Crush, Go Back Couple, Hwayugi: A Korean Odyssey, My Time with You and What's Wrong with Secretary Kim, together with the Chinese web series A Love So Beautiful. In celebration of its 15th anniversary of bringing quality foreign dramas, ABS-CBN aired the 2018 Chinese remake of the Taiwanese drama Meteor Garden. With the launch of Asianovela Channel, the channel aired more Korean dramas with Uncontrollably Fond, Woman with a Suitcase, On the Way to the Airport, Bubble Gum and High Society.
In 2019, Asianovela Channel aired more Korean dramas with Because This Is My First Life, Cheongdam-dong Scandal, Goodbye Mr. Black, Live Up to Your Name, Mama Fairy and the Woodcutter, Mother, Something in the Rain, That Man Oh Soo, The Good Wife, Tomorrow, With You and Two Cops. In the same year, the Korean dramas had another very successful return to ABS-CBN with Encounter, Gangnam Beauty, Code Name: Terrius, 100 Days My Prince, Hotel del Luna and Touch Your Heart. Meanwhile, I Have a Lover marked the very successful comeback of the Korean dramas in the morning timeslot.
In 2020, ABS-CBN aired Flower Crew: Dating Agency, The Tale of Nokdu, Love in Sadness and hit multi-awarded Chinese historical drama Story of Yanxi Palace. However, the programming of both ABS-CBN and Asianovela Channel were disrupted by the ABS-CBN franchise renewal controversy, which forced both channels off the air on May 5. Love in Sadness and Story of Yanxi Palace were not able to complete their runs.
On June 1, Asianovela Channel came back on air and rerun its programs from the beginning; Story of Yanxi Palace also moved to the said freemium station. On June 13, ABS-CBN temporarily moved its programming over to cable and its video-on-demand service iWant, under the name Kapamilya Channel. As part of its inaugural programming, Korean cable dramas Familiar Wife and the recent hit The World of a Married Couple will air in the mornings and evenings, respectively, with the latter taking over the time slot of the cancelled Make It With You, Same Day, The Filipino Channel first time aired Asianovelas, As part of its inaugural programming, Korean Television dramas such as Love in the Moonlight and The Tale of Nokdu From June 15, but Only Available in USA, Canada, Europe, Middle East and IPTV Feed for Australia and New Zealand.
On June 28, 2gether: The Series became the first lakorn to be aired by an ABS-CBN affiliate and the first boys' love drama to be aired in the conservative Philippines. It was the first Asian drama to run first on iWant before being broadcast on television, similar to how the Tagalog dub of Faith debuted on ABS-CBN Mobile ahead of ABS-CBN's terrestrial channel in 2014.
On July 1, Asianovela Channel was forced to stop broadcasts again after the National Telecommunications Commission issued an alias cease and desist order against the operations of TV Plus digital channels, which are transmitted through the Channel 43 frequency. This came about after pressure by congressmen opposed to the renewal of ABS-CBN's franchise, despite the fact that the Channel 43 franchise of Amcara Broadcasting Network had not yet expired. [6]
