Swift's career began with a record deal with Big Machine Records in 2005 and the release of her eponymous debut album the following year. The album was the longest-charting album of the 2000s decade in the US, where it peaked at number five.[6] The album's second single, "Teardrops on My Guitar", became a crossover hit, while its third single, "Our Song", made Swift the youngest person to single-handedly write and perform a number-one song on the US Country Songs chart.[7] Swift's breakthrough second studio album, Fearless (2008), topped the charts in the US, Canada, and New Zealand. Its singles "Love Story" and "You Belong with Me" were international crossover hits, propelling Swift to international fame. Fearless was the best-selling album of 2009 in the US,[8] and 13 of its songs reached the top 40 of the US Billboard Hot 100, breaking the record for the most top 40 entries from a single album.[9] The album was certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America in 2018. Swift obtained her first number-one single in Canada with "Today Was a Fairytale" from the Valentine's Day soundtrack (2010).[10] Her third studio album, Speak Now (2010), was completely self-written, peaking atop the chart in US, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. Its singles, "Mine" and "Back to December", reached top-ten in the US.[11]
Swift's genre-blending fourth studio album, Red (2012), was her first number-one album in the UK,[12] and spawned the international top-ten singles "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together", "I Knew You Were Trouble" and "22"; the former was her first Hot 100 number-one single.[13] Her fifth studio album and first all-pop project, 1989 (2014), was the best-selling album of 2014 in the US,[14] and spawned five Hot 100 top-ten singles—"Shake It Off", "Blank Space", "Bad Blood", "Style" and "Wildest Dreams", the first three of which reached the top spot.[11] Swift became the first female artist in history to have both a single and album certified Diamond by the RIAA, with "Shake It Off" certified Diamond in March 2020. In 2016, Swift released a song with Zayn for the Fifty Shades Darker soundtrack, titled "I Don't Wanna Live Forever", which reached the top five of various national charts worldwide, and is Diamond certified in Brazil and France. Swift's sixth studio album, Reputation (2017), was her fourth album to debut at number one in the US with first-week sales of over one million copies, following Speak Now, Red, and 1989,[3] and the highest-selling album of 2017 in the US.[15] It spawned the international top-ten singles "Look What You Made Me Do" and "...Ready for It?"; the former was Swift's first number-one single in the UK and the fifth in the US.[16]
Swift left Big Machine in 2018, signing a multi-album deal with Universal Music Group, which promotes her releases under Republic Records imprint.[17] Her seventh studio album, Lover (2019), spawned the global top-ten singles: "Me!", "You Need to Calm Down" and "Lover",[11] and became Swift's sixth consecutive number-one album in the US. All 18 tracks of the album charted simultaneously on the Hot 100, breaking the record for the most simultaneous entries on the chart by a female artist.[18] Lover was the year's best-seller in the US.[19] It sold a million units first-week in China[20] and set a Guinness World Record as the world's best-selling studio album of 2019.[21] Swift's eighth studio album, Folklore (2020), was a surprise release, announced hours before its release. It broke multiple streaming records, including the Guinness World Record for the most first-day album streams by a female artist on Spotify.[22] Its singles "Cardigan" and "Exile" reached top-ten in several territories worldwide, with the earlier debuting at number-one on the Hot 100, giving Swift her sixth US number-one single, making her the first artist ever to debut atop both the Hot 100 and Billboard 200 charts in the same week.[23]
