Writing and composition

"Getaway Car" was written and produced by Swift and Jack Antonoff. "Getaway Car" runs for a duration of three minutes and 53 seconds;[2][3] and it has a tempo of 86 beats per minute. Swift performs it in the key of C major in a vocal range span from G3 to D5.[4] Shortly after the two-minute mark, there is a key change to D major. Musically, the track is a synth-pop number, reminiscent of the works of her 1989 era.[5]

Lyrically, the song speaks about attempting to leave a "doomed" relationship for someone else, using crime scene escape metaphors. Swift also mentions the infamous criminal couple Bonnie and Clyde in the lyrics.[6]

Critical reception

Zack Schonfeld of Newsweek called the song as an "excellent, radiant song" and claimed that the hook is "massive, in both catchiness and energy".[7] In 2019, Rob Sheffield of Rolling Stone ranked "Getaway Car" as Swift's thirteenth best song.[8]

Chart performance

The song debuted at number 9 on New Zealand Hot Singles, and number 33 on Australian Digital Tracks.

Live performances

The song had its debut performance at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, on May 8, 2018, as the start of the three-song encore for Swift's Reputation Stadium Tour.[9]
