Overview

Suffolk New College is a multi-campus mixed general further education college, with the main campus located in central Ipswich.[3] The College also runs Suffolk Rural[4] (Previously Otley College) and Suffolk New College on the Coast in Leiston[5] (Previously Alde Valley Sixth Form). The College offers secondary and further education courses such as vocational programmes, GCSEs and apprenticeships as well as some higher education and leisure learning courses. As of 2018, the college has 4,473 students enrolled and 450 staff.[6]

The College was founded in 2009 after the then Suffolk College was split into Suffolk New College, dealing with further education, and University Campus Suffolk dealing with higher education courses. In August 2009 a new building costing £70 million was created for the college.[2] The 22,000 square metre building consists of four floors with a range of facilities surrounding a central atrium which rises to three storeys.

Facilities include a range of classrooms, workshops and other learning and support spaces. A fine dining restaurant and a bakery are run by students on catering courses. The restaurant, Shelley's, is open to the public. [7]Workshops include construction, motor vehicle and electrical workshops.[8]

Suffolk New College Sports Centre was built more recently and includes facilities such as a four court badminton sports hall and two multi-purpose rooms available for public use.

From the 1960s through to the 1990s, the former Suffolk College was a major provider of training for technicians in radiation protection.

gollark: And people will complain if a config tweak takes down everything for 20 minutes.
gollark: The industry is æ. They have "deadlines" and "requirements" and use bad languages I don't like.
gollark: Anyway, I haven't really decided much yet, but I *probably* don't really want to work in software as a job.
