The school is a coeducational boarding and day school educating roughly 65 students in grades 9 through 12. It was founded in 1957 and the curriculum emphasizes college preparatory academics, educational experience in the wilderness, global travel, and both recreational and competitive skiing/snowboarding programs.

A minimum of 12 classroom credits is required to graduate from the Steamboat Mountain School.

- Caroline Lalive (born 1979), alpine skier and two-time Olympian
- Travis Mayer (born 1982), freestyle skier (moguls) and Olympic silver medalist with degrees from Cornell University and Harvard University
- Ryan Max Riley (born 1979), freestyle skier (moguls), US Champion, and humorist with degrees from Harvard University, the University of Oxford, and Yale University
- Johnny Spillane (born 1980), Nordic combined skier, three-time Olympic silver medalist and a World champion
- Bill Browder (born 1964), British financier. CEO and co-founder of Hermitage Capital Management and author of Red Notice: A True Story of High Finance, Murder, and One Man's Fight for Justice, focusing on his years spent in Russia.
- John Milius (born 1944) graduated in 1962 is a renowned screenwriter, director, and producer. He was the writer for the first two Dirty Harry films and received an Academy Award nomination for screenwriter of Apocalypse Now.
