History

Founded in 1957, it was known as Chelyabinsk-70 until 1991. During the Soviet era, it had a closed status and not shown on maps. Additionally, civil flights over it were forbidden. Town status was granted to it in 1993.

Administrative and municipal status

Within the framework of administrative divisions, it is, together with two rural localities, incorporated as the Town of Snezhinsk—an administrative unit with the status equal to that of the districts.[3] As a municipal division, the Town of Snezhinsk is incorporated as Snezhinsky Urban Okrug.[3]

Science

Snezhinsk is one of two centers of the Russian nuclear program (the other is Sarov) and is built around a scientific research institute—"All-Russian Scientific Research Institute Of Technical Physics".

International relations

Snezhinsk is a sister city of Livermore, California, United States.[7]

gollark: You can overdose on *water*, if you have a lot of water.
gollark: You can overdose on basically anything.
gollark: You *probably* won't be dead at 75. Life expectancy in developed countries is higher than that.
