Przodkowo

Przodkowo [pʂɔtˈkɔvɔ] (Kashubian: Przedkòwò) is a village in Kartuzy County, Pomeranian Voivodeship, in northern Poland. It is the seat of the gmina (administrative district) called Gmina Przodkowo.[1] It lies approximately 8 kilometres (5 mi) north-east of Kartuzy and 23 km (14 mi) west of the regional capital Gdańsk. It is located within the historic region of Pomerania.

Przodkowo was a royal village of the Polish Crown, administratively located in the Gdańsk County in the Pomeranian Voivodeship.[2]

During the German occupation (World War II), Przodkowo was one of the sites of executions of Poles, carried out by the Germans in 1939 as part of the Intelligenzaktion.[3] The "death march" of about 11,000 prisoners evacuated by the Germans from the Stutthof concentration camp camp to Lębork passed through Przodkowo at the turn of January and February 1945.[4] Many prisoners died as a result of hunger, exhaustion and executions by the Germans.[5]

There is a Firefighting Museum (Muzeum Pożarnictwa) in Przodkowo.

The village has a population of 1,286.
