Panthera tigris tigris is a tiger subspecies in continental Asia comprising the following tiger populations:[1]
- Bengal tiger — occurs in the Indian Subcontinent from India, Nepal and Bhutan to Bangladesh.[2]
- Siberian tiger — inhabits Northeast Asia, from eastern Siberia to Northeast China,[3] and possibly North Korea[4]
- Caspian tiger — inhabited Western and Central Asia[3]
- South China tiger — occurs in southern China[5]
- Indochinese tiger — inhabits Indochina,[6] with the exception of the Malayan Peninsula
- Malayan tiger — inhabits Peninsular Malaysia[1]

A whole-genome sequencing analysis of 32 tiger specimens supported six monophyletic tiger clades and indicated that the most recent common ancestor lived about 110,000 years ago.[7]
