Station facilities here have been improved as part of the Tees Valley Metro project. The package for this station included new fully lit waiting shelters, digital CIS displays, renewed station signage and the installation of CCTV. In 2018 Northern Train have now installed a ticket machine. The long-line Public Address system (PA) has been renewed and upgraded with pre-recorded train announcements.[1]
The station is on the original mainline of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, where it junctioned with the Clarence Railway at what was then known as Simpasture Junction. However, the station is a relatively recent addition, having only opened by British Rail in 1978.[2]
