The NCS specialises in the teaching of Maths and the Sciences, and contains nine labs that are equipped to a high standard for studying the Sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics).

The NCS opened as a 16–19 Free School on 1 January 2018, as part of the City of London Multi-Academy Trust.

The founding Principal, Mouhssin Ismail, a former City of London leading lawyer, was the former Director of Sixth Form at Seven Kings High School.[1] Many key teachers  including Deputy Principal Anita Lomax  also joined from Seven Kings.[2]

Working with Newham Council, the NCS is the academic A Level centre of a group of partner secondary schools in the borough. These schools are Cumberland, Kingsford, Lister, Little Ilford, Plashet, Rokeby, Royal Docks, Sarah Bonnell and Stratford School Academy.[3]

On 12 November 2014 UCL announced a strategic partnership with Newham Collegiate Sixth Form Centre. The partnership aligns with the aims of UCL 2034, reflecting UCL’s commitment to being a publicly engaged institution with an interest in the education of London students.[4]

Inspection of 16–19 provision at NCS in 2016

The 16–19 provision delivered at the NCS was inspected as part of the Ofsted inspection of Newham Council's Skills Funding Agency provision in March 2016. The inspection was primarily of Newham Council's adult education provision, but the sub- contracted 16–19 provision delivered at the NCS by Newham Foundation was included in the inspection. The report graded the 16–19 element of the provision as Outstanding[7] Comments from the inspectors included:

“Teachers provide outstanding teaching, learning and assessment. This ensures that all learners make very good, and often exceptional, progress with their work and in gaining their qualifications. “[8]

“Teachers provide excellent impartial advice and guidance to the learners. Teachers are very adept at relating learning to learners’ aspirations and they encourage learners to be ambitious in their future career plans. Almost all learners have clear, aspirational and carefully considered career plans. Managers and teachers support learners exceptionally well to realise their ambitions. Teachers and guest speakers provide highly effective guidance, support and challenge to help learners complete well-written personal statements and university applications."[9]

gollark: Stupid ambiguous English.
gollark: Oh, I thought you meant that it was on one planet in the *book*.
gollark: Pretty sure they didn't.
gollark: No, it just beams it everywhere.
gollark: Definitely not a new language, probably a few more terms at most.
