M. K. Kumaran

M. K. Kumaran (1915–1994) was a writer, journalist and politician of Kerala, India.

Early life and education

He was born on 30 May 1915, in Melkulangara in Kottarakkara in Kollam district to K. Kannan Vaidyan and Ummini Amma. During his student days he joined freedom struggle and became a member of Congress. After taking a degree in law he practiced as advocate for some time and later joined Kerala Kaumudi Daily as a journalist.

Career

Politics

He came into close contact with some senior Communist leaders including M. N. Govindan Nair and joined the Communist Party of India. Having involved in trade union activities he became the office bearer of several trade unions and contested the Loksabha elections from Chirayinkeezhu in Trivandrum twice. He was elected both time and held the office of Member of Parliament for two terms (from 1957 to 1967).

Journalism

After this tenure as M.P., he became the chief editor of Kerala Kaumudi. In 1971 he was appointed as a member of Kerala Public Service Commission and later became its chairman.

He has written several articles on progressive literature and politics and translated many works mainly Russian, into Malayalam.

Personal life

His wife is C. N. Subhadra. Former diplomat and analyst of international politics M. K. Bhadrakumar is his eldest son, who wrote articles in Tribune in the aftermath of the Uri attack. He died in 1994.[1][2]
