Jessore

Jessore, officially known as Jashore,[1] Bengali: যশোর) is a city in and district headquarter of Jessore District and second largest city in the division of Khulna, south-western Bangladesh. It is the capital of Jashore District. Jashore City consists of 9 wards and 73 mahalls. Jashore municipality was established in 1864. The area of the town is 25.72 km2. It had a population of 201,796 at the 2011 census. The literacy rate was 56.57% in 1991. It is the location of the Bangladesh Air Force base Matiur Rahman.[2] It is near Bookbhora Oxbow Lake.[2]

It is the birthplace of Sanatana Goswami (1488–1558) who was the principal disciple of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.
