Leonardo (A 5301) is a NATO Coastal Research Vessel owned by NATO and operated by Marina Militare as Coastal Research vessel (CRV),[3] shared by CMRE - Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation, in La Spezia Italy.

History
Leonardo was delivered to NATO Underwater Research Centre - NURC (SACLANTCEN) on 30 April 2002 and was accorded the flag of a public vessel of the Republic of Italy under a 2001 Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of defence (MOD-IT) and the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in the Atlantic.
On 16 November 2009, CRV Leonardowas entrusted to the Marina Militare and officially transferred under the Italian naval flag.
Leonardo holds the status of an auxiliary of the Marina Militare and is manned by a military crew.
NATO Underwater Research Centre - NURC is now named CMRE - Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation of La Spezia, regarding acoustic and environmental fields [4]
