Hinduism in French Guiana
Hinduism is a minority religion in French Guiana, introduced and practiced mostly by the descendants of the Indo-Guyanese, who in 2014 numbered around 360,000.[1]As of 2010,Hinduism is followed by 1.6% of the population of French Guiana[2].
History
The abolition of slavery by France in 1848 created a labor crisis in its three colonies in the Caribbean. A large number of Indian laborers were brought into French Guiana from neighboring British Guiana, and while some of those had been converted to Protestantism most were Hindu, with perhaps 20% Muslim.[1]
