Hertsa

Hertsa (Ukrainian: Ге́рца [ˈɦɛrtsɐ]; Romanian: Herța [ˈhertsa]) is a city located in Chernivtsi Oblast in western Ukraine. It is the administrative center of Hertsa Raion. Population: 2,119 (2015 est.).[2]

The city is the smallest raion administrative center in Ukraine and is located close to the Romanian border.

History

Hertsa and the Hertza region were part of the Moldavia historical region (administratively in Dorohoi County).

Later, it became part of Austro-Hungary. In 1918 it was occupied by Romanian troops.

In summer 1940, it was occupied by the Soviet Union, attached to the Ukrainian SSR[3] and became a city[4].

Since 1962 until December 1991 Hertsa was part of Hlyboka Raion[5][6][4][7].

In 1969 the population was 1500 people[5].

In January 1989 the population was 2360 people[8][4].

Since the fall of the Soviet Union, it has been part of independent Ukraine.

In January 2013 the population was 2122 people[9].

The town has a large Romanian (68.08%, 2001) community[10].
