McKirdy was born in London[3] and brought up in the Stoke-on-Trent area, where he attended St Joseph's College.[4] He was on the books of Stoke City from the age of seven to fourteen, and then joined Aston Villa's academy. McKirdy signed a scholarship in 2013,[4] and went on to sign a two-year professional contract in 2016.[5]
McKirdy trained with the first team in 2016–17 pre-season,[3] but had played no first-team football by the time that he joined League Two club Stevenage on 31 August 2016, on loan until January 2017.[5] He made his club and Football League debut on 24 September, coming on as a substitute in a 2–0 defeat to Exeter City.[6] He scored his first goal for Stevenage in an EFL Trophy tie against Brighton & Hove Albion Under-23s on 4 October 2016,[7] and scored his first league goal in a 2–1 win for Stevenage at Mansfield Town on 29 October 2016.
In January 2018, he signed for Crewe Alexandra on loan to the end of the season,[8] and scored on his Crewe debut against Wycombe Wanderers on 20 January 2018 after coming on as a second-half substitute.[9]
On 31 January 2019 McKirdy joined Newport County on loan until the end of the 2018–19 season.[10] He made his debut for Newport on 19 February 2019 as a second-half substitute in the League Two 4–1 win against Notts County.[11] McKirdy scored his first goal for Newport on 13 April 2019 in the 3-0 League Two win against Cambridge United.[12] He was part of the team that reached the League Two playoff final at Wembley Stadium on 25 May 2019, although he was an unused substitute in the final.
In the summer of 2019, it was announced that McKirdy had been released by Aston Villa.[13] He signed for Carlisle United on 11 June 2019.[14]
