The shopping center opened in 1990[1] and was originally anchored by Proffitt's, JCPenney, Goody's Family Clothing and Kmart. Proffitt's became Belk in 2006, Goody's closed in 2009 and became Burke's Outlet in 2010. JCPenney closed on July 31, 2017. Ross will be moving into the former JCPenney building. Kmart closed on April 24, 2018.[2] Marshalls, Hobby Lobby and Five Below will be moving in the former Kmart building in 2019.[3]

Some store owners such as Carolyn's Hallmark and Legacy Fine Jewelers have commented on the Commons' owner, Brixmor saying the rent is too high.
