It serves the theater in which the station's name derived from (Chongqing Grand Theater) and its surrounding area, including the Chongqing Science and Technology Museum and office buildings in the Jiangbeizui CBD.

The station opened on December 30th, 2014.

Due to its location below the car lanes of Qiansimen Jialing River Bridge and different elevations in its vicinity, the majority of the station is elevated(above ground, below the car lanes of the bridge), with the remainder being below ground(2 exits of the station).

gollark: Ironically, they use this authentication method on a web chat thing *on their self-service control panel thing*, which has a perfectly functional login mechanism anyway.
gollark: My phone provider will happily accept you as me if you know name, birthday and location apparently.
gollark: I guess some local Facebook cache server is still working, but unable to communicate with any backend services.
gollark: If I curl it I get a "sorry" page.
gollark: Surely it couldn't have been that hard to make the door system work without constantly querying internal stuff.
